Cameron Fleming Contract

It has been reported that Cameron Fleming signed a 1 yr, $3.5M deal with the Cowboys. But the actual terms of his contract are important.

  • Signing Bonus - $1M
  • Salary - $1M
  • Roster Bonuses - $500K ($375 LTBE based on 12 games)
  • 60% Playtime Incentive Bonus - $300K
  • 70% Playtime Incentive Bonus - $300K
  • 80% Playtime Incentive Bonus - $400K
2018 Salary CAP charge - $2.375M
2019 Salary CAP charge - $125K + $$$ for earned playtime incentive bonuses

The important thing about his contract is that if he doesn't earn a starting job, and is on the roster as a swing tackle, then he won't earn the playtime bonuses unless someone gets injured. This allows the Cowboys to draft an Offensive lineman in April, and have that lineman compete for a starting job. If the Cowboys draft a guard, and keep Collins at RT, then Fleming's contract becomes a $2.5M deal. If the Cowboys move Collins to Guard, and draft an OT, then Fleming has to beat out the rookie for the starting job in 2018.

If the Cowboys do decide to move Collins back to guard and spend a high pick on a rookie, then Fleming's contract allows them to develop that rookie OT for a year, and then plug him in as a starter a year from now. It's a win-win situation for Fleming and the Cowboys. Fleming would get a year to earn a larger paycheck as a legitimate starting Tackle in the NFL, and the Cowboys get an inexpensive option to start at Right Tackle while a rookie is developing in 2018. This also allows the Cowboys to cut Green and his $721K salary in 2018, and use a rookie as the swing tackle. And if the rookie tackle earns the starting job, then the Cowboys get a relatively inexpensive swing tackle backup with starting experience in the NFL.

So, I think it is reasonable to put Offensive Tackle high on the Cowboys draft priority list.

50/50 that we take an OT with the first round pick.

There will be an OT in R3. Rankin is intriguing. We need LB and S worse. We can determine success with the first three picks we make.
