IRVING, Texas - The Cowboys are indeed splitting this year's training camp between San Antonio and Oxnard, Calif., with the opening practice scheduled for July 24 at the Alamodome.
The Cowboys, still under a camp contract with the City of San Antonio, will train there through Aug. 6 before heading to Canton, Ohio, for the Aug. 8 Hall of Fame preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Then it's briefly back to Dallas to prepare for the Aug. 12 game against Oakland at Cowboys Stadium.
The team will leave the next day for Oxnard and practice Aug. 14-27 at the Marriott Residence Inn River Ridge Complex. Scheduled in between is an Aug. 21 road game at San Diego.
The Cowboys will break camp and head to Houston for the Aug. 28 game against the Texans, then resume practicing at Valley Ranch for the Sept. 2 preseason finale against Miami at Cowboys Stadium.
Oxnard is a familiar camp headquarters - the Cowboys trained there full-time from 2004-06 and 2008 - and the mild temperatures are conducive for outdoor workouts. From 1963 to 1989, the team also held preseason camp at California Lutheran College in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
The air-conditioned Alamodome also protects the players from the unforgiving Texas heat. The Cowboys have been pleased with the amount of work done in both locations.
"We are very excited about this training camp schedule," Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said in a statement. "Spending two weeks in both San Antonio and Southern California gives us the opportunity to reach out to the very strong fan followings that the organization enjoys in two traditional training camp homes for the Cowboys. We have always received tremendous receptions and hospitality from the fans and community leaders in both San Antonio and Oxnard.
"From the football perspective, we see a serious benefit in being able to conduct all of our two-a-day sessions in ideal temperatures and on both artificial and natural grass surfaces."
