Are there any campers out there that can give me some advice?

My girlfriend and I are about to try camping out but I haven't camped in 20 - 25 years or so. I'm looking for recommendations on good camping gear. In particular a good tent that'll hold our queen size inflatable bed and maybe a few other things.

My number one rule of advise for camping is to make a honest assessment of how many times you think you'll be using the equipment, and make your purchase accordingly. However, with camping equipment, the adage 'you get what you pay for' is never more true. It's important to find a proper medium.

IIRC, there was a thread on this topic not too long ago that covered this topic. I'd try and do a search for 'tent'. However, there are several equipment review sites you can find with a google search that would likely be far more helpful than the relatively few campers you may find on this forum.

My son and I had a camping trip two weeks ago.

We used a small 3 season tent. No way would a queen-sized inflatable mattress fit in it.

Sorry I'm not much help. I hadn't camped in years until two weeks ago.

Ridgeway tents are really good. Kelty tents are not bad. Coleman the same. The best thing to do is look for a 6 to 8 man tent with an air mattress that big.

Holler if you want some cooking ideas.

as an old guy who has camped a lot, ignore all the macho talk about your air mattress...take it and enjoy it.
take pillows.
coleman doesnt make a bad anything. there are some better but coleman
is solid.
take wet-ones.....so handy for so many things.
if you go to a state park and you intend to have a fire....take wood.
thats just a few ideas....great time of year for camping in texas.

I think we're going to try Huntsville State Park to start. It's pretty close and has some nice nature trails:

dont really camp much in east texas anymore ( originally from beaumont area)

i have noticed the older i get , i tend to camp at parks closer to where i live.

i hate to get started on ALL the things you can take cuz my wife says i
seriously over do it on gadgets, gizmo's, and assorted stuff.

trash bags, toilet paper, matches, leatherman tool, first aid items....

If you are still in college, you should go and see if they'll let you rent equipment for free or cheap.

You should find out what the camping grounds have and see what else you'll need.
