I didn't see the entire show, so I don't know if Wade was even on it.

But Campo got his own segment on there. Dave Freaking Campo.

Why does this position coach get so much attention from our media? You never see Ray Sherman or Reggie Herring highlighted like this.

I wasn't against bringing Campo back, but now just seeing his mug irritates the hell out of me. There's just something not right about a guy like him getting such an inordinate amount of attention simply because he was here before and always smooched up to the media.

Anyway, no real point to this post, I guess. Just venting for a minute about something that doesn't seem quite right.

I was dead set against coach Jones hiring Campo back. The three straight 5-11s was just too much suck fest. I literally face palmed when coach Jones hired him.

And of course, our secondary is the weakest link on the defense. To have a pass rush produce around 60 sacks (don't know the exact season ending team totals at the moment), and yet only 8 friggin interceptions? You have to be kidding me. How many blown tackles and coverages by the DBs gave up how many 3rd & 10+ situations? How many huge running plays because DBs couldn't or wouldn't tackle?

I was against Campo coming back, but I have to admit the secondary did improve quite a bit this season over last. A lot of that was Jenkins and Scandrick but I have to give Campo some credit.

At this point Im more irritated with Houck coming back, the Oline underperformed all season.

It looked to me like the secondary was worse this year than last year. A lot worse.

Maybe because he's the only one who wants face time.

The secondary was way better this year than last!!!!! And we finally have hope for the future. Scandrick and Jenkins look like players

Scandrick and Jenkins looked good which suggests they got proper coaching.
Pacman was fairly good until the suspension. TNew as wildly inconsistent and still struggles to locate the ball when in the air. Henry just doesn't have the physical skills to play CB anymore. Ball looked better this year than last.

The safety position was a mess but he was going through the season without RW38. Hamlin was average. Watkins kept getting injured. He got reasonable play out of Keith Davis. Courtney Brown is useless which I can't attribute to him - he is clearly an athlete looking for a position to play.

Alot of the weakness in zones looked to be LB coverage which is probably most attributable to Bradie James.

Overall, I thought Campo's secondary did better than could be expected under the circumstances and played well over the last half of the year.

Other than the WAS game, where he pretty clearly tried to come back too soon, TNew was one of the stars of our defense this year. We put him on other teams' best/fastest WRs, and he was singlehandedly responsible improving our secondary coverage the last half of the year.

Our zone coverage over the ILBs was *much* better than it was last year. That's mostly because Zach Thomas is able to get deeper into zones than Akin Ayodele ever was. We played most of this year with weaker coverage safeties than we had last year, and our intermediate zones weren't nearly the weakness they'd been previously.

How do you back this up?

Only 8 interceptions despite a league leading pass rush.

How many 3rd & 10 + yards plays give up this year? 10? More than that?

How many long running TDs because our DBs either flat out refused to tackle (Newman and Jenkins), or simply couldn't tackle (everyone)?

This year's secondary was a disgrace. If it hadn't been for the outstanding front 7 this defense would have been one of the worst in the league.

He was dominant some games and had some off-games. He was our best corner this year but did not play as well even after the surgery as he has in previous years. You can choose to see it the way you want, but this wasn't the 2005/6 Newman out there.

Our underneath zones were horrific for the first part of the year and were better over the second half of the year. However, BJames is still a big weakness.

The safeties were weak this year with Hamlin clearly declining from the previous year and the rotating set of strong safeties due to injuries. I think our best long-term hope here is to draft a true cover safety and then get rid of one of RW/Hamlin in 2010.

This is a good analysis. I just wish everyone would stop knocking Hamlin so much, though - he can't play FS and SS at the same time. We definitely need to upgrade that position and get him some help this off-season. Too bad we don't have a 1st round pick anymore to position ourselves for Taylor Mays (USC) :bang2:

I'm still trying to forget about that. Good point though. As bad as I truly believe Campo is, he is still much better than Bruce Read.

Campo is not bad. He is okay DC and a very good secondary coach. He is just not a good HC.

The safeties definitely were. Hamlin had a much better yr last yr than this yr. Roy Williams, for all the grief he gets here was alot better than anyone else we trotted out there this yr.

Actually he cant play either of them. He sux in coverage and doesnt have much range for FS, and his tackling this yr was some of the alltime worst.

He was the worst player on our defense this yr.

Well even if we had a 1st round pick I don't see Mays lasting past the top 10.
