Can a player be a great talent if we don’t like them?

This question came up in another thread. I’d never considered that there are fans who won’t recognize a players greatness if they aren’t a fan of him or their team.

Is this where we are now. That if we aren’t a fan of a player that they can’t be considered a great talent ?

The word talent is often used to describe a players measurable attributes. Speed, jumping ability, and change of direction test are part of the NFL combine. So a player can be talented, like Lamar Jackson, but that doesn't mean I think of him as a NFL caliber starting QB. QB's are suppose to pass the ball not run it. And that's my sticking point with Lamar.

If someone cannot recognize the greatness of a player, on another team, then they could be considered bigots. I'm a diehard Cowboy's fan, and I can openly admit Jerry Rice was great.

Even if I don't like a player for his actions off the field, I can still acknowledge his greatness on the field. The allegations against Deshaun Watson make me dislike him as a person. But he is a pretty good QB.

But if I were a GM I wouldn't take in, off the field problematic, players like Watson. Just saying.

I’m not talking just about a player with talent who under achieved or doesn’t meet their potential but a player who is very successful but since you don’t like them for whatever reason you won’t acknowledge their accomplishments and impact to the game.

I've noticed major biases due to personal dislike, yes.

I have a major bias against some members due to a personal dislike of their Rowdy profiles.

There are great players whom I have not been a fan of even some who have played in Dallas. But I can't deny the greatness in their play.

If you have a sliver of an open mind, it's not hard to recognize greatness. There are so many players I absolutely hate, but fully recognize their greatness as athletes and players.
Rodgers, Beckham Jr., Ray Lewis, L.T., T.O., just to name a few.

Showing my age...three QB names that come to mind..Mr Starr (late 60's), Mr Bradshaw (middlin 70's) and finally...Mr Montana (early 90's)

Others...Mr Manley, Messers Green, Greenwood and Lambert...the list could go on and on and on.

Through it all...still a Cowboys fan.

    Go Cowboys!

This is like the perfect example of the OP's point. Lamar doesn't fit your mental image of a QB, so you don't think he's an "NFL caliber starting QB," even though he clearly is and in fact is one of the better QBs in the league. Plus, the guy has a career passer rating over 100, so it's not like he can't throw the ball.
