I wonder if anyone can find what the scouts thought of Romo when he was available to be drafted in the NFL.

I'd be curious to see what the scouts thought - I understand they can be wrong so don't start - and how close they were to what he does on the field.

More especially if they saw something mechanical in his game, or decision making that aligns itself with what is shown on the field.

It could very well say he was golden and everyone ignored it.

But I think this would be interesting since this is the Romo channel 24/7 here.

Gentlemen, and ladies, start your engines.

I had to question that report as being recently written as well. you look at that and frankly I am astounded some team did not risk a 7th on him.

Even if it was recently written, it wouldn't change his college states, that 7.78 ypa at a better than 60% completion percentage as a senior said a great deal about his potential. There were several at the time on the forums that thought the signing of Romo as a possible coup... Risen Star being one of them.

The "small school" mindset combined with his 5.0 40 time caused the drop. Most teams probably didn't think he was athletic enough.

I read through the scouting reports posted in this thread, and unless I missed it, I didn't see anything that addressed Romo's weaknesses.

That's what I'd be interested in seeing. Because based on those glowing scouting reports one has to wonder why he wasn't taken in the 5th or 6th round.

His biggest weakness was going to a small school followed by his 5.0 forty time and that he's only 6'2".

After the 4th round teams are many times just crap-shooting when it comes to picks.

You are probably right.

If I were in charge of a scouting department actual game tape would weigh heaviest in my decision making.

Too many times teams get wrapped up in forty times, HT/WT, long jump measurements, etc.

Give me the guy who's proven he can play the game. I'll take that guy over the guy who simply looks the part, all day every day.

The thing that is really not mentioned in these write ups, though it was a big reason nobody drafted him, was his release and throwing mechanics. The Cowboys had to completely re-teach him how to throw and basically scrap his natural release. If this were not the case, he absolutely would have been drafted IMO. It takes considerable time to master this and most teams are not willing to spend that kind of time on a lower round draft pick or an UFA. By the time you start seeing results from this coaching, the player is ready for a new contract and that puts a team in a position where they have to commit more dollars to an unproven player. Nobody wants that and to be honest, probably only a team that had zero options at QB would even consider it. It has to be a very specific set of circumstances that allows for this IMO. Fortunately for Romo and the Cowboys, it worked out.

On a side note, it was very good to reread a post from Cbz. I miss that guy.
