Can Anyone Name Another Team Which Had An "Apprentice" In Training For HC?...

Here in Washington DC, they've been talking about Gregg Williams as being a "head-coach-in-waiting" when Gibbs finally hangs it up for two or three years now.

Funny things can happen in even a year's time, though. Suddenly Williams' Defense has a down year, and people want to run him out of town.

That's why I wouldn't hand the 2008 or 2009 HC job to Garrett just yet. We have no idea how he'll pan out as a coach.

That's why I think we should still consider some younger guys like Rivera and Ryan. Nothing wrong with having two up-and-comers on one staff. Doubles your chances of having one of them work out.

...I'm trying to recall if I have ever heard or seen a situation like Jerry may be about to create in Dallas with Jason Garrett starring in "The Apprentice-Dallas Cowboys 2007".

I realize teams promote assistants all the time to be their HC, but I'm talking about the situation Jerry may create with Jason Garrett playing the role of "The Apprentice".

Besides Dick Vermeil and Mike Martz in St. Louis, (which really wasn't known until after the Rams won the Super Bowl), I can't think of anything similar to this situation.

If he does this, I believe it will be one of the strangest things Jerry has done in the 18 years he's owned the team.

If you think about it, every head coach to ever coach in the NFL got his training somewhere under someone...thus, anytime you've seen a team hire the next HC from within, he was "in training"....If Ken Whissenhunt or any of the guys in Pittsburg had gotten the job there, that would have been the same thing without actually talking about it.

There's no guarantee that Jason Garrett will ever be HC of the Cowboys...people are blowing this way out of proportion. He's a bright young coach and perhaps a guy some see as a rising star, so to sign him and get him back into the organization he loves, working with an owner he gets along with, is a smart move.

However, there's no guarantee that he will ever be our HC...that's all speculation. If Norv Turner, Wade Phillips, or anyone else is doing a good job in Dallas, going to the playoffs and winning games, Jason Garrett will not be handed the job. If Jason Garrett doesn't do some special things and show that he's capable of rallying the team while in his role the next couple of years, he could be fired just the same as anyone.

If Norv was always the top choice for the Cowboys, then it only makes sense to give him a young OC that he already knows and trusts and that already knows his offense. Thus, we see offensive coaches leaving and defensive coaches mostly staying.

Bringing in Jason Garrett, even with all the accolades and hoopla, means nothing beyond this coming season...he'll still have to prove himself and wait his turn, if it ever comes.

Sure theres coaches in waiting all the time.. but not with this set of circumstances.

Even if that were the long range thinking theres actually no reason it should be talked about right now anyway..aside from fans wanting to speculate.

The official word on him should be.. we just wanted to get a bright young mind on our staff in the role of QB coach/OC ... and left it at that.

it's all speculation - you seem to be choosing which media speculation is "gospel" so you can simply be worried about it.

Exactly! My concern is that it has the real potential to undermine the next HC's authority and respect in the team concept, regardless of who is the next HC.

Read Jerry's official statement about Garrett remaining in the mix of the current HC search. If you think the writers just made that up about Garrett being Jerry's man for the future, I think you are ignoring the obvious.
