If Kelchy is the BPA at 14 I assume we would pass unless the team thinks Carter can play outside.

too small and not stout at the point of attack to play 3-4 OLB. People would run all over his side. No edge will be set with him. the only way he would play OLB with us is if we switch to a 4-3 defense. He would be a beast at WOLB in the 4-3.

While Sean Lee and Kuechly beast at MLB and SOLB. I've been touting this all day. Kuechly appears to be a bigger more athletic Sean Lee.

Is this realistic, or am I crazy?

I think they are looking at him. Being touted as the safest pick on the D side of the ball by many scouts.

Yes, he can. He played OLB at UNC. We moved him inside because of his sideline to sidelines speed.

Luke Kuechly is a player I would come away form this draft feeling like we got a great piece of the puzzle.

I agree. Getting Luke would give us great flexibility with our LB's and how awesome would it be to see Luke and Sean Lee play with each other?

If we do pick Keuchley, would you view Carter as OLB (ie not resign/franchise Spencer) or see him as back up at ILB (ie resign/franchise spencer)?

Do you think this could lead to us going to a 4-3 or at least playing in it a lot more?

I can't remember the exact numbers, Noryb, (it was posted on this site) but we were in a 4-3 alignment A LOT more than people realize, last season. Rob Ryan's defensive scheme isn't really married to either alignment (4-3 or 3-4). It's versatile enough to use the bases of both defenses and neither.

With that being said, I'm not sure that a switch to any base defense would be a prerequisite to drafting a guy like Kuechley (sp?) to replace Spencer's position if he is, in fact, the best rated player on our board. Ryan is creative enough to get all those guys on the field and make them productive.

In Rob Ryan defense you better be able to move around and lineup at different spots through out the course of the game. People continue to talk as if Ryan is running some standard defense yet guys are being asked to move around and line up in different spots. Maybe we need to look at what Ryan needs and wants instead of viewing the defense and players in a conventional sense.

Interesting. Thanks SkinsScalper!

I wouldn't say he is too small. He is only 11 pounds from being the same size as Spencer (who is 257 according to yahoo while Carter is listed as 246). He could add that with the strength and conditioning coach we have on board now. Both are 6'3". The question is, would Carter be strong enough to hold up to that side?

Even though it isn't an exact measurement of strength, for comparison sake, look at their combine bench numbers:

Spencer Bench Reps: 30
Carter Bench Reps: 25

Another thing to contemplate is whether Carter has the pass rush skills to pressure the QB on a consistent basis. It would be an interesting option to test out in camp.

Carter isn't known as being a strong player who sheds blocks well. I'm not sure a steady diet at SOLB would work for him.
