Can Garrett now prosper in the playoffs?

Well..

This is a haunting question.

And I have been as critical as anybody with Garrett's play calling, freezing the kicker time outs, insisting on passing when we should run, running too stubbornly when when we need to pass and missed red-flag challenges of the past.

He seems under this new coaching staff arrangements to have corrected his lack of experience and used his staff to make better decisions..

BUT

that is the regular season and now the playoffs loom large ahead.

Many expect a deep run into the playoffs with our Ground and Pound Offense and Bend But Don't Break Defense.

But I wonder about what happens in the playoffs now.

Does Garrett continue his steady coaching or does he crack under the pressure to get to the next level?

I mean for 4 years we have had to wait to get back to respectability as a winning franchise..

Do we now wait another 4 years before we do something in post season ?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Over to you guys...

Game management from the sidelines has been much improved this season. You can point to a few plays here and there, but that's to be expected over the course of an entire season. I think he and staff will continue to do a good job.

Well for one he and Lineham have figured out how to get optimum and maximum performance from Romo while building a wall around him so unless this O-line crumbles or we have some major injury, I expect us to continue to put up points, maintain long time consuming drives, and be very competitive in the postseason. Second we don't have the defense to cover a sputtering offense so it's imperative that we continue to put up points and eat up the clock to keep the "We-fense" off the field as much as possible and fresh enough to swarm to the ball when they do eventually get back out there. This team goes as the offense goes, especially against teams above .500.. I like our chances. My only concern is how effective Murray can be with a broken hand because one aspect is missing from his game right now and it showed last week, no stiff arm capability. That hurts us....

Of course this team can succeed in the post season. The level of resiliency has this team at 11-4. In our 4 losses, how many of them did we blow leads in like in the past? Our defense has closed the game out throughout the season with clutch TOs and some of those scores may have been altered to a larger margin of victory if the refs weren't screwing us over in recovered fumbles we had going back for 6.

I still think our defense ends up being too much of a liability to overcome. But we'll see. Many of the playoff teams have flaws, though, so it a lot is going to be determined by what the match ups end up being.

After troops have become battle hardened, I wouldn't send them into a battle with doubts.

This is what I'm seeing.

Our defense has been consistently over achieving. So much so, that one has to wonder if they are truly over achieving or are they who they lay claim to be? The new Dallas "we-fense".

IMHO, it appears that Jason's strong suit as HC is ala Jimmy Johnson, which is what we have, or at least I have, wanted all along these past 4 years. Have your assistants be accountable in their jobs and he oversees the operation and keep the team focused on the big picture. Before, he tried to do too much and instead would have major lapses in game management which should be his #1 concern during the game.

And with his lack of HC experience, this should have been how all this started 4 years ago.....so I think as long as he keeps it going with this winning formula, there should be no reason not to prosper in the playoffs as well. We shall see, but at least this team, and Garrett, has gotten to the next level.

I don't see how anyone can "expect a DEEP run in to the playoffs".

Zero chance we are favored in any game after the Wildcard round....and that will be a tiny spread even if it's the Lions.
After that, Dallas is not expected to win again.
Hoping otherwise, of course.

We can can expect a deep run, why do you say no one can expect it.
How many expected to be at this point, with 1 week left in the regular season. Most expected us to only have 5 or 6 wins.
As for being favored, who cares, that's a Vegas / pundit talking point.

That's a defeatist perspective, saying don't expect it, so if they don't, one says, I told you so, and makes themselves feel better. If they do make a run, then the "I hope or the I was wrong, glad I was wrong " can be used.

So I can expect a run in the playoffs. Though I often said 8-8 until they prove me otherwise, I still expected 10-6 at least.

If I...were King...of the mountain, not Duke, not Earl, but King...

but using presented logics, there would be snow and I would slip off before reaching the top. (go figure the ability to walk through snow)

Same here, and because of that defense, the Cowboys offense may have to ultimately score a lot in a hurry depending on how things play out. That probably means passing more than they want too, and if it doesn't work, here comes the Jason Garrett and Tony Romo hate clubs.

Garrett (and, more importantly, his coaching staff) will eat these playoffs for breakfast.

I think if the Cowboys run into a better team, Garrett will go back to being a horrible head coach. Maybe even with basic schemes.

Maybe we define "expect" a little differently.

Hope and expect are not the same.
For me, I wouldn't be shocked if we made a deep run. And of course, I'd be the happiest man around if we did.
But expecting it is something different in my view. That says if they don't make a deep run, they failed. I'd disagree with that.

And yes, more often than not a team that is favored is considered one that it is expected to win. One that is not...less so.

As for preseason...I was much more optimistic than most around here and continuously spelled my reasons why....most of which have come true and more.

I just don't think we have the D to do much, if anything, in the playoffs. I don't put that on Garrett.

I like Garrett a lot more as a walk around coach. I think he is a good inspirer and is getting the most out of this team right now.

Has he fixed his issues with time management? I don't think we've seen him in that position much this year. I think his personnel management still shows some issues with not pulling players out early enough.

I also think he has only been able to be at his best when he has allowed Jerry to provide him with the proper staff. Both our offensive coordinator (passing game coordinator) and defensive coordinator have been head coaches. Hell our offensive line coach (or running game coordinator/offensive coordinator) has been a head coach. Kiffin has obviously been a head coach. Some of our position coaches have been head coaches at the college level.
