Can Randy Gregory do in 2016 what DeMarcus Lawrence did in 2015?

http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas-cowb...lynch-winding-up-in-dallas-makes-little-sense

...“I think anybody who relies on speed and anything to do with their legs is something that can impact them, but injuries are a part of the game,” coach Jason Garrett said after the season. “You have to come back from them. You have to play at a high level and we all understand that.”

The Cowboys’ second-round pick in 2014, DeMarcus Lawrence, did not record a regular-season sack as a rookie either. He missed the first seven games of his rookie season because of a broken foot suffered in training camp.

It took Lawrence until the playoffs to get on the sack scoreboard and he had two in two games, which brought hope for 2015.

Lawrence ended up leading the Cowboys in sacks in 2015 with eight but had just one in the first eight games. He finished with seven in the second half of the season.

The Cowboys’ hope is that Gregory can do in 2016 what Lawrence did in 2015.

“I do think Randy got better as the year went on,” Garrett said. “Unfortunately for Randy, really like DeMarcus, early on in the season in their first year, they missed time because of injury. Players learn so much when they first start playing because experiences are really vivid in their minds and when you don’t have an opportunity to play early on that sets them back a little bit. But you have to take advantage of the opportunity that you do get and I do think that when Randy did come back in the latter part of the year he played better and better as the year went on, not as productive as any of us would have liked but I do think he made strides.

“He has a long, long way to go though. We’ll get him back in here in the offseason and get him back to work and hopefully he’ll continue to improve.”

I see no reason that Gregory wont come back strong. He has the desire and love of the game.
Does he have the skinny leg syndrome

I think Gregory is more than capable of doing in 2016 what Lawrence did in 2015. As long as Gregory works hard this offseason on his body and craft like Lawrence did last year...this kid can be a major difference maker. Gregory has more upside and is a much better prospect, top 10 type talent. I just hope he stays away from the Bob Marley (real and synthetic) and doesn't get injured again.

Part of me thinks he can and should come back great next year and take the same step up as D-Law did.

Part of me thinks he looks like a quintessential 3/4 OLB - 4/3 DE tweener that doesn't fit either.

It'll be interesting to see how the DEs shape out. Lawrence was given the starting job last year and solidified it with his play. He'll definitely be a starter next year. Question is, where? Do we bring Hardy to be the WDE while Lawrence stays at SDE and Gregory moves around? Or do we give Gregory the WDE job while Lawrence stays at SDE and we find someone to fill in the backup role? Or do we take a guy like Bosa for SDE while Lawrence moves to WDE and Gregory is once again the odd man out?

I think Lawrence is a SDE, I do not think he has the all the tools to be an every down WDE. Gregory has the tools but I think his genes may catch up to him, he needs weight and to keep his speed, i just do not think his genetics will let both happen.

This same thing was said about Lawrence as well. 9 months later, he looked nothing like the twig he was in 2014.

Personally, I think Gregory's ceiling is probably even higher. He's a small dude, but participating in an actual NFL offseason will do wonders for him. If he can keep his speed and add some strength, he's gonna be really really good IMO.

Disappear for half the season and not show up when it mattered the most, only to put up garbage stats later in the year?

I think Gregory with an entire off season working at team facility will greatly benefit. I felt when Dallas drafted him he was a bit on the light side to play DE but I think with the offseason program they will be able to put some bulk on that frame and increase his strength. In my view it all comes down to how bad Gregory wants it and the work ethic he puts into it.

I sure hope so because Romo can't carry the team for much longer. Nothing good comes from carrying such a burden.

I agree
If you watch him before his injury he played with amazing power for his size. He's never gonna be huge but he will get stronger and if he can stay in the mid 250's I think he will be fine. He plays smart, uses leverage well.
