Can the Dallas Cowboys find value bargain shopping?

Chris Long

Long has simply not been his productive self over the last couple of seasons, however that can mainly be attributed to injuries.

He has missed fourteen games over the last two seasons thanks to freak accidents to his left ankle and right knee. Prior to that, however, Long posted four straight years of 8.5+ sacks.

To put that into some perspective, that total would have led the Cowboys in each of the last two seasons.

Aside from the production aspect, there is also the veteran tutelage he can provide to an extremely green defensive front. While Demarcus Lawrence seems to be on the upward swing, having Long around to mentor Randy Gregory and whoever the Cowboys choose to draft to bolster the front line would be very advantageous to the growth of this team.

The early reports are that Long is only interested in signing with a contender which should include the Cowboys in the mix, given that they are just one year removed a playoff run cut short by a horrendous call.

As an added bonus, Long has already made a significant amount of money on previous deals and that, coupled with his decline in play, could mean that Dallas could bring him in for something close to $3-5 million per year on a two year deal...

Jaye Howard
I like Nick Hayden. You like Nick Hayden. There is nothing wrong with Nick Hayden.

He’s that Toyota Corolla that gets you to and from work Monday to Friday. That’s all you ask of him and that’s all you get. Unfortunately, the Cowboys need more. A lot more.

Enter Jaye Howard.

Howard is the same size and plays the same position as Hayden. He’s also three years younger, quicker, stronger and more talented.

Starting 23 games the past two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, he is the type of player that can both be an he is a power player anchor against the run, but also flash pass rush prowess from the interior. He had 5.5 sacks last season and one in the playoffs which would be four more than Hayden has accumulated in his entire career.

Since fellow interior lineman Tyrone Crawford just got paid a nice chunk of change, it would be wise for the Cowboys to give him a running mate on the inside who will draw some attention and help deflate the pocket up the middle.

Howard can definitely be that guy.

You will have to pay a little more for him because of his youth (27) and promise, but you should still be able to get him for a discount of sorts. A contract offer resembling three years and $24 million could get it done and give Dallas two guys who will still be under the age of 30 when the 2019 season is nearing an end.

Brandon Boykin
It’s no secret that the Cowboys need to revamp their entire defensive backfield.

The two players that started the most games last season are both likely to be in different uniforms when the 2016 season rolls around. Another guy who was the first player chosen in the NFL draft by this team in 2015 will likely be in a new position next year.

The Cowboys are desperately in the market for multiple cornerbacks.

So, if you need at least two, you probably need to pick up one on the cheap, right? With that being the case, you could certainly do a lot worse than Brandon Boykin.

Boykin’s eight career interceptions in just four seasons would be more Orlando Scandrick has in seven seasons. It’s also just one less than Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne had combined during their entire stays in Big D.

The Steelers trusted Boykin enough to give him the second most defensive snaps during their playoff run. You can trust him to be capable of playing both slot and outside cornerback spots, providing at the very least, depth to a position in need of it.

He will be just 26 years old when the season rolls around and has never been given a big contract so it’s feasible to assume the Cowboys could lure him back to the NFC East on a two-year deal around $2-3 million per season.
