Can too much passing hurt a QB's arm?

All we do is pass, pass, pass. It has been this way for a few years now. Romo's passing has been off as of late. Could it be an issue of too much passing? I know in baseball a manager has to strategically protect the throwing arms of his pitchers. Football is different, but I can't help but wonder if Romo's arm is just breaking down. We've been so focused on his ribs, etc., but what about his arm? Those were some horrible throws yesterday.

Brett Favre had one of his most brilliant seasons at the end of his career, arm strength and accuracy were all still there as we learned that year in the playoffs. I have to believe that man has to be up there in most passes ever thrown by a QB, if not he probably is #1 in that category.

I am very concerned about Romo's play. His passes just dont have the zip. He's been inaccurate, and he can't deliver the long ball.

This is my point exactly. There may not be anything wrong with his arm, but I can't help but wonder.

Good point. In Favre's case it wasn't an issue and I can think of other QBs who had long careers without turning into noodle arms, but something is off with Romo. It really showed yesterday.

He's always been a poor deep ball throw in my opinion now it's become even worse!

The thing with Romo though is that he doesn't look like he is trying to put anything on his passes. He just kind of tosses them in there without really letting it rip.

His deep balls could be a case of arm strength, but i'm not sure about the other ones.

I've heard others express that his deep ball was never that great, but he looked pretty good throwing to TO in '06 and '07. Even if what you say is true, why has his deep ball become worse? You don't forget how to throw so it must be physical.

I don't think he'll wear his arm out. Most of his throws are under 20 yards. The important thing for him as he ages is to work out his legs; where the power comes from.

I was thinking the same thing. His deep ball to T.O. from 2006-2008 was fantastic. Still remember the one in the Eagles Monday Night game. Third and 10, Romo pumps, airs it to T.O and at the time was the longest play in Romo's career.

Your eyes tell you its his arm strength but if you look at his foot work he is throwing off his back foot more often. This is why there is more air on his passes and lack of zip. Go back and look at film on Romo earlier in his career and you will see how he drive thru his throws with his feet. Its ironic because this is probably best I have seen offensive line play in years and it looks as if Tony has more time to throw the ball. But you can't erase 8 years of 300+ pound guys planting you.

You didn't bring this up, but if anyone has read anything biographical about Tony you know he had a pretty legendary routine coming up where he basically threw every day... which is highly irregular. I wonder if he still does that?

The best thing they could do for Tony is bring in a new QB coach, it may add a year on to his career.

I've considered this too. Parcells was the HC but I think he was a great influence on Romo. It's a shame he "abandoned" Romo (and the team) after the bobble. We'll never know what long term impact he could've had on him.
