and save $? I'm not sure how the cap would work in this situation. If we were to cut him now would we save any $, or is the guaranteed $ he's owed make it not worth it to cut him at this point. I bring this up because hes obviously not a vital part of our defense and is probably overpaid.

Just saw something on twitter about this. I would be very surprised if we did honestly. Unless we pick up someone in free agency AND the draft I don't see it happening

On dallascowboys.com there is a recent article discussing five vets who could be cut and the money saved. It includes Buehler, Newman, Kosier, Coleman and discusses Spears.

It appears the decision may be between Coleman and Spears on the DL, but given Colemans age, etc he would be more likely to be cut.

They discuss specific cap saving numbers in the article.

Cutting Spears doesn't do anything. His salary cap figure is only $2.5 million and he would actually be more expensive to cut ($3 million cap hit) than to keep.

If you want to cut an under-performing defensive end, Kenyon Coleman's $1.9 million is not guaranteed in 2012. You can cut him free and clear.

No it will cost more to cut him this year than it would be to keep him. Next year will be the time to cut him.

His base salary is $2 million. If we cut him, we'd either lose $100,000 of cap room (plus the cost of replacing him in the top 51), or we'd gain $2 million this season (minus the cost of replacing him in the top 51) and have $2.1 million in dead money next season.

interesting...do you think it's worth it?

This would be a very stupid thing to do which is why it will probably happen. :laugh2:
I like him on 1st and 2nd down. Definitely not worth where we took em, but not a crappy player

We aren't going to get anywhere by cutting relatively cheap players who contribute. It isn't like we are going to use his money to get a stud in that position -- he's a good rotational DE.

So the answer is a big no, thanks for clearing that up.

Why would we want too?

It does not make any sense.Cut him and sign who? And probablty for more $$$4, and then don't know what your going to get.

I would cut Spears...he is the poster child for mediocrity on this defense. I can careless that he tells good jokes in locker room and might be one of their leaders. Tell me how many of those Giant players on front 4 are all warm and fuzzy guys? ...they just want to knock u out for good.

There needs to be philosophical change in Big D on how they evaluate leaders and the need for more alpha leaders Woodson spoke too few weeks ago.

I say out with warm and fuzzy and in with nasty.

So you want to cut him not because of his play, which is adequate, but because he's a nice guy? uhhhh

I absolutely cut him because of his play. But you don't just keep him cause he is "coachable" and jolly type leader in locker room. The core issue with this team is that their leaders on both sides of the ball are "warm and fuzzy personalities" who fail to produce when it matters most.

We have 3 CB who we need to replace (Newman,Ball and Walker)
2 ILB (James and Brooking) I don't see cutting Spears and creating yet another hole is going to help this team.

It's an interesting situation.

People look way too much at cap number. The cap number is much less meaningful towards whether we'll keep a player than the actual salary he gets. The signing bonus will hit the cap in one way or another; it's not going to disappear.

Spears will make $2 million, Coleman will make $1.9 million.

Given we have Ratliff, Hatcher, Lissemore, and Brent (who could probably make about as good of a rotation on their own), I'm sure we'll only keep one.

My guess is we keep Spears and cut Coleman (even though I think Coleman had the better year last year), just due to age.

If Spears is cuttable, then so are 15-20 guys on this team, so it shouldn't happen, at least not this year. He may be a JAG at this stage of his career but good luck getting rid of all the JAGs on this team in one year and replacing them with non-JAGs.
