Can you change the running game without changing offensive goals?

First of all, I hope that each and every one of you is having a safe and pleasant holiday. I also want to thank each person that's served in the military and those that lost loved ones for their service. Okay, that being said, here is my question. Can you change the running game approach and still keep the offensive goals in tact?

The line should be better.
The running game should (but may not be) placed in higher importance by the offensive coordinator.

My wish list for the running game:

  • use of a lead back (fullback, f-back or h-back)
  • a larger running back or one that can run in between the tackles and get 3-4 yards each time.
  • I would like to see some counter trey action.
  • more use of two tights on the same side of the line
    • I want this team to be able to say "we are running right through THAT hole and we are gonna stomp a mud hole through your backside when we do it and have you beg us to just score so as to not inflict more pain.
  • being able and being willing to run when close to the goal line and 90% (would prefer 100%) conversion rate on 3rd and 2 and less. Yeah I know wishful thinking.
All that being said, I would love to see a team that can run for more than 150 yards a game and control the clock to the tune of 40 minutes a game. What say you?

I'd love to see that too. I also want a pony.

In the last decade, five teams have managed to average 33 minutes time of possession. No team has managed 34 minutes.
No Cowboys team has averaged 150 rushing yards per game since 1981. I'm not holding my breath that this team will do it.

A closed mouth doesn't get fed...LOL...so I'm wide open and hungry for winning again. What I wouldn't do for a NFC championship in Dallas and seeing the fans with smiles wide as the stadium itself...and if some of those fans go to the Superbowl and that smile widens...call me happy and well fed.

I can draw you a pony...and mail it to you. It's a goal, but I know it won't happen, but you don't ask a pretty girl out hoping to only get a hug because 100% of the previous suitors only get that much...you hope you're the one that gets a little extra...perhaps a kiss and the promise of another date. Alright...off the soapbox for now...

They most definitely overloaded the strongside and try to have the TE and Hback do combo blocks on the end. Hanna sucked at it and they never even gave Escobar the chance to try.

Really can't argue with you here. This hope you speak of is what keeps most of us around. But after so many years of mediocrity, I'm trying my best to keep those hopes realistic. With the addition of Martin, I honestly beleive this offense might actually be consistently entertaining again. It is the defense that concerns me the most at this point. I will say the offense on paper looks better than it has in years, so you might not be asking for too much.

How old are you? I hope for a heck lot more than a kiss and another date. Of course, I'm married w/children now, so kissing and another date is already factored in to the equation.

I just want a dependable running game. That should give us better short yardage reliability and more flexibility on 2nd and 3rd downs.

You'll be hard pressed to find a team that routinely has 80 yard scoring drives while mostly using the run. You need a defense that is somewhat dominant or that creates a ton of turnovers to shorten the field.
Of course those two things feed off each other.

I'd be thrilled if we could just be confident in the run when we need it most.
I like the odds this year--especially (barring injury) in the 2nd half of the season when Martin has adjusted. T Fred came on strong last year,IMO.

LOL...I'm 44 and back on the market after a long relationship..so fill in the obvious blanks.

If we can get to the 12th game and we have a 8-4 or better record I will feel great that this team can finish strong. I think if you can run well and conversely stop the run and keep the other team from going deep successfully and often, you will win. But isn't that like saying if you drink water you won't be thirsty?

Might have to put in the wishbone and start wearing leather helmets to get some of those numbers.:) If your like me youd be satisfied with breaking off more long runs and getting more first downs on the ground.

we can always call up Barry and tell him it's 1970 again and we are in Oklahoma... But in all seriousness. I love nice runs. It kills a defense. If you can't stop the 7-8 yard runs and the occasional 20 yard gains, you won't win. I've said over and over, all political correctness aside, I want the OL to be a bully. I want to see the defense quit, opposing DCs fired and to have our OL talk about ending careers. I never want to see someone crippled or hurt physically. I respect the game too much for that. However, I don't mind sending them home to their families and out of our way.

I think we need a LG and another RT to get that done, but I hope I'm wrong.

Isn't that what your trying to do now. Giggidy.

Okay, too damn witty for me. I'll stand down and keep my comments just about the Cowboys. I feel like I'm on an episode of Family Guy. I might need to change my name to Quagmire

Emmitt used to butter his bread with a cut back run, my memories fuzzy but I believe it depended mainly on the guard and center pushing the hole open and walling off which requires less from the RT but I think Free is better at pass than rush. But after you get 3 1st rdrs on the line Free, Berny Mac and Leary are pretty good compliments.
