which do you consider the most prevalent factor in the 90's cowboys winning superbowls. their great defense or their great offense. personally, I think it was their great offense. jmo, of course.

For the 90s Cowboys, I would say Offense for sure. The Defense was built to play limited snaps and use speed. They were not built to withstand a pounding ground it out type games.

I'm sure you could....anything is possible. When Rogers won his SB, they didn't have a defense.

Yes, they did. They were getting turnovers and got a key one in the Super Bowl.

Actually, it seems when a lot of these elite guys got their Super Bowl wins, it was due to their defenses forcing a lot of turnovers. Something our D isn't doing enough of right now. They had 11 turnovers in the playoffs

Watching the NFL channel Last night one of the analysis made a very good observation about the Rams/Chiefs game. He indicated that both teams would not be in the Super Bowl. Even though both have great offenses, their defenses were pretty bad. Without a great defense those offenses would not carry them far into the playoffs. I agree with him 100%, and then he said that the only team in the NFL right now is the Saints who has a very good offense but it is their defense that will carry them into the Super Bowl.

Rams defense scored twice. Without this KC might have won this game. Funny thing is both defenses made plays, both defenses scored touchdowns, the rams had 3 int's, kc sacked goff 5 times.....plays were absolutely made but their offenses would just not be undone. Most teams get 5 sacks they win, most teams get 3 inbt they win, score a defensive td you typically win, but these offensive juggernauts put the pedal down and kept the TD's coming.

I stand corrected. Someone won without a Def, I just can't remember who then.

Probably an outlier somewhere, but it hasn't happened recently. A lot of people point to the Giants, but they got hot at the end of 2007 and 2011 and didn't allow a single team (including Cowboys, Patriots and Packers) to score more than 20.

The eagles just won one.....not sure how many rushing yards the Pats had but Brady had I think like 505 yards passing.

While the defense didn't play well in the Super Bowl, they had one of the better defenses last year, kept Falcons and Vikings to low scoring, got 3 turnovers against the Vikings, and got a strip at the end of the Super Bowl that secured their victory.

rams chiefs was the game of the year. Not often or ever that we saw 2 teams score so many td's on offense all while making plays defensively too.

Only team I can really think of that didnt have a Defense that could at least on occasion get a stop was that 2008? Colts team?

One of those team that Peyton Manning just willed to a super bowl with marvin harrison, Reggie wayne, and Dallas Clark

Only defenders who they had was Freeny who would get destroyed by the run game and a super tiny Safety Bob Sanders(i think) who was injured all the time and was that season as well up until the Super Bowl

The 2006 Colts may be the worst regular season defense to ever win it all. But that's because Bob Sanders only played 4 games in the regular season.

Sanders would be HOF if not for injuries. He was just as good as Polomalu and Reed and it showed. The Colts gave up an average of 173 rushing yards without him in 06, but that dropped to 82 when he was in the lineup.

The Colts started 9-0, but finished the season 3-4. They were viewed as being toast going into the playoffs, but Bob Sanders return allowed the Colts to win some uncharacteristic tough games for them.

Green Bay was #1 in Opponent Passer Rating in 2010.

The reason that strong pass defense didn't continue for the next few years was Nick Barnett's injury issues.

They don't have to be "great".

But they do seem to meet a certain benchmark with their pass defense; a defense that hovers around top 5 in Opponents Passer Rating.

Of the past 15 SB winners, 11 ranked 8th or higher in Opponents Passer Rating

Of those 4 teams:

  • 2 are the Giants and we all know that those defenses really turned it on in the playoffs.
  • 1 is the Colts, which I explained up a few posts were transformed by Bob Sanders return (only played 4 games in reg season)
  • The last is the Eagles last year. I'm pretty sure we'd all agree they were a "good" defense, but they are an outlier.

That great defenses win championships is just a buzzword. Rah rah football talk of the stupid kind. Good feel for the team who won a championship with a great d who beat a great o.
