The Cowboys will have 88 players on their roster after signing their draft picks and must trim to 85 before camp. Who are the prime candidates to be cut?
My choices:
RB KEYLON KINCADE Kincade is out of practice squad eligibility, and the chances of him making the 53-man roster over Julius Jones, Marion Barber and Tyson Thompson are slim to none. Dallas has five regular running backs on the roster now, plus short-yardage back Lousaka Polite, and that's more than the team needs.
WR AHMAD MERRITT The main reason Merritt is on the roster is because of his ability to return punts. After drafting Skyler Green for that role, and with several other candidates on the roster, there is no pressing need to keep Merritt ... and the other receivers on the roster have more potential as receivers.
K SHAUN SUISHAM Suisham is not going to overtake Vanderjagt on field goals or extra points, and does not have the leg to be a possible kickoff specialist. He could be kept to keep Vanderjagt from being overworked, but I'd rather Dallas experiment with Mat McBriar kicking off in relief of Vanderjagt. (If we were to eventually bring in a kickoff specialist, Suisham would not be it.)
OTHER CANDIDATES With 10 receivers on roster, it would be easy to trim from that position, cutting the "worst" of Austin Miles, J.R. Tolver or Sam Hurd, but I still think Merritt makes the most sense. (Jamaica Rector doesn't appear to be a likely candidate to me.) ... We've also got nine defensive ends, although Vontrell Jamison and/or Junior Glymph might be considered OLBs, so we could cut one of those two guys or Stephen Bowen. ... The rest of our numbers at each position look about right. I could see Shannon Snell getting cut, but we were running thin enough in interior offensive linemen to bring in an extra one after E.J. Whitley got hurt. And although we need a lot of linebackers for this scheme, with 13 on the roster (15 if Jamison and Glymph are included) Dallas could make a move there — maybe J.J. Horne or John Saldi?
