Salary cap expands to $127 million for 2009

Posted: Adam Schefter | Adam Schefter | Tags: Free Agency 2009, Salary cap
The salary cap will grow in 2009.
Because teams didn’t spend as much as they were supposed to under the collective bargaining agreement the past three years, teams were notified Wednesday that the salary cap will increase over $4 million to $127 million for this coming year, according to sources with two NFL teams.
It defies the recession and logic, but just before free agency, teams actually will have more flexibility and salary-cap room. This is tremendous news for teams such as the Colts and Panthers, who are pressed against the cap, and not such good news for teams such as the Buccaneers and Chiefs, who were way under the cap. Now their advantage is somewhat compromised.
Teams believed they would see a mild increase in the salary cap, but this is bigger than teams expected.

Wait..so we are 14 million under the cap now? Or was the projected 10 million already counting that?

Just an excuse for agents to use in order to increase their clients potential salaries

hahahaha, that one was pretty good. The whole uncapped year thing in 2010 is a great hoax to scam NFL franchises.

I don't know why that's funny, it's exactly what is going to happen.

Yep, since the cap began to rise so did player salaries and now you have monster contracts out there that counteract the increase in the salary cap..NOw Ray Ray is going to be asking for 16-17 instead of 10-12 or whatever it was

This a bad trend for the league as a whole.
The ever incresing cap leads to ever increasing salaries in an already overpaid sport. In these poor economic times, the last thing the NFL needs is bigger contracts.

Overpaid? Football is about the only sport where contracts aren't guaranteed.

Hell, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett each make about 24 mil a year, before endorsements, and the team with the highest salary (Mavericks) spend under $100 million on their entire roster. And this is a sport where only 5 guys from each team can play at once.

Baseball is even more ridiculous, considering at any given moment, there are usually only about 3 people actually doing anything.

You can play those sports into your 40's as well, football, you're considered old if you're playing past 30.

This gives us another 4 million on top of what we had before. Now if we'll cut or restructure Ellis, Henry, and Williams we'll have even more space.

So adding that 4 million,,reconstructing Roy or release..and release Henry would create roughly 20-21 million in cap space? possibly 25 with Ellis gone too?

Yeah the NFL contracts, while they seem high, aren't anything compared to that of basketball of baseball players. Some of those guys get completely insane deals.

And I don't fault any of the players for getting every dime they can. That's what we all do in any of our jobs. We do our best to get the most money we can possibly get for our services. Anyone faulting players in the NFL for doing that, simply because they can command more for what they're doing, needs to ask themselves if they're going to take a pay cut, or refuse a raise, the next time something comes up at their jobs.
