Cap Numbers and why they don't make sense.

I've been one to welcome the creativity and the change that is perceived that SJ and company have made the last few years. With that being said, if we want to be a deeper team , and have better players in skill positions, they have to be better than what a few of these numbers show. If you can reason and justify some of our cap numbers, then you have to be honest, drop the pride, and bring some better players in, or not let some good ones go in exchange for these guys. Here are a few examples.

1) Claiborne & Carr- 17.3 Million between the two of them. That number is an insult to true shutdown corners. I'm loving how Mo has stepped it up, but not to the point where he's our 5th highest paid player. Carr is okay at best.

2) Sean Lee 6 Million. - when he plays we all know he's the best. So does this mean if he played a whole year he would get a 12 million a year contract.

3) Doug Free and Berney 8.5 Million for our worst two OL. Doesn't make sense. What will Fred and Zach want?

We can find ten different ways that we could have been creative with enough to have signed Murray, got a veteran WR and some help for our 3 below average Safeties. I love the contracts we gave Dez, Tyron, Crawford, and Mincey. And we are seeing that Tony is deserving of every penny. We have to do some things to help these guys out at the top.

Do any of you real cap gurus have a prediction on where we will be with the cap in the next couple of years?

Yes, Carr is overpaid but his salary is 8M. His total cap hit is misleading because some of that is basically money they "borrowed" in previous years to pay other players.

Lee's salary this season is 2.5M.

Nobody really knows exactly where the NFL cap limit will be in future years but it is expected to continue to increase.

The Cowboys are still in decent shape even if the NFL cap stays flat.

Carr is unlikely to return unless hectakes a pay cut. Claiborne will have to stay healthy all season for a chance at a decent contract next year. Lee's salary is 3M next year. Free can be cut and his contract will have been 1 year, 6M. Bern won't get over 1M if he stays.

You should look at either base salary or AAV.

Yea! Why didn't we fix every little problem on the team in just one offseason like everybody else does in this salary cap era???

I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm just saying there are a few holes in your argument.

1. You said, "We can find ten different ways that we could have been creative with enough to have signed Murray, got a veteran WR and some help for our 3 below average Safeties." But I can't really recall anybody saying WR was an issue until recently. Everyone was saying our WR depth was excellent. Dez was Dez, Beasley was our Welker, Williams was emerging, Street was ready to take the next step. Nobody was arguing that we should address WR in the offseason. I recall many posts saying it was our deepest position outside of OLine. Heck, even after Dez got hurt, people were shooting down ideas to get veteran WRs.

2. You say you're happy with contracts of guys like Mincey, but then you say you're not happy with Free and Berny. These feelings kind of conflict. For one, Mincey is a slightly above average DLman and Free is a slightly above average OLman. If our DLine had as many 1st round picks as our OLine does, people would be wanting Mincey replaced the same way they've wanted Free replaced for years. And two, if Mincey does lose his starting job to a more talented younger player (Gregory/Lawrence) and is more of a quality depth player than a key starter, then his role won't be much different than that of Berny's. Of course, it's a little different to evaluate because OLine backups typically get 0 snaps while DLine backups may still get 15-20. My point is, you still need to pay guys if they're average starters or quality reserve players. You can't complain that we pay two guys of that type on OLine but be happy that we pay someone of that type on DLine.

The cap should not be a problem going forward.

Those bad deals will be gone and GHardy is the biggest FA next year.

They may to have to sign/draft a CB and decide on RoMcClain but if they stay out of major FA there are no problems.

Guys like Leary, Dunbar, Free, CWhite and Mincey are lesser decisions.

If you check other teams....that's about the going rate for players of all those guys caliber. Byron Maxwell just like Carr got a similar contract if not more. Claiborne is on his rookie deal.

You are picking out old deals. We stopped handing out bad deals like Carr's years ago.
