Hi all big time cowboys fan living in Scotland. Unfortunately that means getting info on the boys usually can only be found on the net as most sports channels over here only really care for our version of football.
The information i was looking to find out is what kind of cap room we have going into next season? i know we released a few big earners during the season but would like to know if we are ok to maybe get a few solid FA's in that would help the team collect ring number 6?

any info on this would be most helpful.

We will probably have more than 20 million in cap room when free agency starts so we'll be able to get multiple free agents.

that's good to know, will we receive any cap penalties for releasing some of the players i.e Andre Gurode?

:welcome:It's cool to have fans from Scotland. America's "World" Team.

my grand father's last name on my Mom's side was 'Archbold'........;)

......we have some dead money from Gurode and other cap casualties....but I don't know what it is off hand: ANYBODY?

We will likely have between $20-$30M in cap space if players expected to be released are released.

Cool. I am related to Robert the Bruce (which I thought was pretty cool until I saw the movie Braveheart). Welcome.

Thank God we didn't sign Nnamdi to that ridiculous contract he got in Philly. We would've been handicapped for years.

Ahhhhggggg! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I don't know the specifics of the deal, but I'm guessing it was in the 12mil a year range for 5-6yrs, probaby less. And I'm guessing the cap hit in 2011 was less than 10mil and probably about that in 2012.

So here's the question.......would we have made the playoffs this season had we pulled off the Nnamdi for Newman swap last year?

I say yes. But put that to the side for just a second an assume the numbers on his contract I guessed on are close to what he really signed for.....

Since we would have released Newman last season, we would have taken an 8 mil dollar cap hit, yet not have had to pay his 8 mil 2011 salary. So that's a wash.

And since we would have had probably used 8 mil in cap dollars for Nnamdi last season, we'd be carrying forward 9 mil instead of 17mil. And we'd have about 10mil more allocated to signed players this year. But since we would have taken the hit on Newman last year, we'd have 6mil more this season.

But one less HUGE hole to fill. Sorry, but I'll take Nnamdi and all the cap ramifications that would have come with it.

Listening to Norm about the new rules and the salary cap, it seems that there is a way to not get punished as heavily this year and or next year....I wish I was writing it all down, but it looks pretty good for us.

If anyone else was listening last week to him talk about it and can explain it better, please do.

Thanks for all the info provided and for welcoming me to the site, as you can imagine Scotland isnt the best place to find people looking to chat about the great Dallas Cowboys or just the NFL in general so quite looking forward to talking bout all things cowboys as the year rolls on. With regards to the chat about Namdi im quite glad we missed out. A guy at his age in a skill position will surely only decline in production as time goes on, we should looking for younger talent and locking them down on a good contract. Other wise your just gonna rotate players every few years.

Reading the transcript, Norm Hitzges appeared to be under the impression that carrying forward unused cap space to the following season was something new.

It isn't.

The way it works is a little different with the new CBA, but teams have been getting cap credits for years.

Now, all a team has to do is notify the league office at the end of their season that they want any unused cap room to be credited to them the following year.

In the old CBA, teams needed to add bogus "incentive" clauses to contracts during the season which would be impossible to reach.

Things like giving a DE a $15 million dollar bonus if he had 20 sacks in the final two games.

Teams "used up" any remaining cap space late in a season with these gimmicks and were credited the same amount the following year when the incentive clauses weren't met.

The NFL simplified the process in the new CBA.

Per AdamJT13, Dallas is going to carry forward something like $17.1 million dollars into their 2012 salary cap.

That "credit" goes on top of whatever the '12 cap ceiling is set at.

If the cap limit is $125 million in '12, Dallas' roof would be $142.1 million.

And that's before they do some internal house keeping that will clear another $10.9 million in room.

The team can also restructure existing contracts (just Doug Free and Orlando Scandrick would add almost another $9M) if the need arises.

The main purpose of that $17 million cap credit will be to offset the $25.6 million in "dead money" the team is eating next season.

The credits whittles that eye sore amount down to $8.5 million.

And the team will also get $25.6 million in new space in 2013 with that dead money off the books.

Don't forget, we can also "borrow" up to $1.5 million (total) from the 2014-2017 caps as well, then "repay" it however we want over those seasons, even if all of it comes in 2017. There is NO reason not to do this, by the way. Even if we don't spend it this season, we can just carry it forward until we need it.

I recorded Norm's show from that day and saved it as an MP3 -- If anyone's interested, I'll try to post it somewhere for download.

It's about 41 minutes in length -- 38MB in size.

Im glad to hear we will have a much better cap to work with than in previous seasons. Should we use a good bit of it to get two good FA offensive linemen ie Carl Nicks and use most of our draft picks to fill in the holes in D? as i see it should we re-sign Robinson then only issue on offense is the O line with the other positions in good shape a good draft for the D and it could be a great year for us.
