Cap Space Problems?

I've been reading a lot of people lately that seem to think we've got some cap space problems. We absolutely do not have a 'cap problem.' As of January 23 we were $15.88 million underneath. Since then we've franchised Hamlin for $4.4 million and signed Thomas. Hamlin's number will be significantly reduced (likely around $2 million) when he's signed long-term. Then, if we wanted to, we could do the following:

Cutting Terry Glenn would add $1.74 million to the cap. Cutting Akin Ayodele prior to June 1 would add $500k to the cap, and after June 1 would add $2 million to the cap (with $1 million in dead money in '09).

Cutting Jason Ferguson prior to June 1 would add $2.375 million to the cap and after June 1 would add $4 million to the cap (with $1.625 million in dead money in '09). And guaranteeing Tony Romo's '08 salary would add $5.417 million to the cap.

So, potentially with those four moves (only one of which would be a change from the '07 roster) we could add $13.157 million to the cap in '08. Meaning, even if all of Hamlin's 4.4 million was counted against the cap, we'd be around $20 million under the cap before re-signing Canty, Barber, Flozell and the rookies, which would in total cost about $13 million against the cap in '08. With that space, if we wanted to, we could go out and sign D. Hall and Roy Williams to long-term huge contracts. Even then, we'd still have room to play with. Now, of course, we won't do all of that, but we do have the option. There's no issue with cap space.

That is good work Theo...

From reading one of Vela's columns it appears that Henry and Ayodele could be headed to Atlanta as part of the Hall trade. Now that would be a good move in relation to creating cap space for Hall and of course help compensate for the Thomas signing.

It will be interesting to see if Dallas does sign Adams. I think it's pretty up in the air at this point.
