*The grey, in addition to contributing strongly to making it too busy in terms of colors (three is a good rule of thumb, four is pushing it), makes it look old instead of fierce.
*The heck is that tuft on the chin?
The end result is a busy image of an old, broken down, greybearded animal. Hardly the image Carolina wants to project.

The bluejay isn't much different but it looks better in this logo over the cardinal logo.
