My old classmate's husband wrote and produced this movie featuring Dallas Carter. They were the other team that was in Friday Night Lights.

Greg Ellis is the executive producer.

Sooner than later, our Chris Vognar will take the field with a lengthier making-of piece piece about the most anticipated film of 2015 among those of us who were here in 1988:Carter High. Until then, here’s the trailer, which made its bow as 2014 became 2015.

As Chris noted over the summer, when principal photography kicked off in Dallas, Carter High is the big-screen adaptation of the up-and-down, win-some-lose-everything tale of the Carter Cowboys, who bested Odessa Permian to become the state’s 1988 Class 5A high-school champs. Former Carter receiver Arthur Muhammad wrote and directed the sorta-sequel to Friday Night Lights, which stars Charles Dutton, Vivica Fox and David Banner as state Sen. Royce West, who, at the time, was the young defense attorney repping Carter star-turned-convicted felon Gary Edwards, among those players sent to prison for their roles in 21 armed robberies.

The film’s as “local” as it gets: Former Dallas Cowboys defensive end Greg Ellis served as executive producer.

Feels like its' going to be somewhere between a 30 for 30 and a big picture like Friday Night Lights. Interesting to see how it will come out.

I went to one of the two Middle Schools that fed into Carter, Dallas Atwell. My class was in 10th grade in 88.

So I went to school with a knew a lot of those kids. That was a middle class neighborhood with as much talent as has ever been accumulated in a true public high school of it's size.
20+ kids went D1.

One of the kids I went to school with and happens to be a Mavs Maniaac is an actor in the movie.
Also happened to play football at Tech while Robert Hall was the starting QB.

Can't wait to watch it.

for the record, Friday Night Lights was erroneous. That was actually the TX State Semi-finals, that Permian and Carter played in. Carter went on to beat Converse Judson in the Championship game, only to later have to forfeit for using ineligible players. That is why we have an asterisk next to that Championship on Rutledge Stadium.

We should have actually played Permian that year, but Carter was found to be cheating until after the season.

I hope in this movie, they are more factual with the ending, unlike Friday Night Lights.

I would love to contact Peter Berg and discuss the lack of facts at the end of his movie, but unfortunately, I do not know how to do so. I personally feel the movie would have had just as much drama and impact had it been the state semifinals where Permian lost. They could have then used the writing on the screen to say that Carter went on to beat Converse Judson for the state title, only to forfeit the title due to use of ineligible players. Permian went on to win the State Title in 1989. That would have done some serious justice to all 3 schools and to those of us to take the history of TX HS football seriously.

Maybe I wouldn't be so passionate about this had I not graduated from Converse Judson, but the fact is I did. I am full of Rocket Pride, and I do not like my school being slighted. In fact, I do not any of the prominent programs in the history of the state to be slighted.

Ok, enough of my rant..........I am all for another TX related HS football movie.......bring on Carter High

Thanks for this post. That's awesome information man. As I recall it's mentioned in the book that Carter had to later forfeit the title because they used players that weren't eligible to even play and were caught cheating.

I remember reading the Friday Night Lights book and being baffled by why the movie made it seem like the game was the State title game when they hadn't even played in the state title game.

It was just one of those Hollywood things I guess where they felt like it was more dramatic and such to make it the state high school championship game. It just didn't make any sense.

I also do like that someone else is verifying the fact that Carter High school was full of cheating BS. The only thing that the movie Friday Night Lights did in regards to Carter was paint them as trying to gain any advantage they could by pulling the race card and everything.

I remember Jessie Armstead was on that Carter team.

Jessie Willard Armstead (born October 26, 1970) is a former American football linebacker in the National Football League who played for eleven seasons with the New York Giants and the Washington Commanders between 1993 and 2003. He played college football at the University of Miami.

High school career
Armstead attended David W. Carter High School in Dallas, Texas, where he was coached by Freddie James. Armstead was part of a highly talented team that featured four other future NFL players — Clifton Abraham, Joe Burch, Le'Shai Maston, Darius Smith — and won the 1988 5A state championship (however, the title was later forfeited due to eligibility infringements).

Armstead was considered the top high school football talent in Texas as well as nationwide by recruiting analysts.[1] He had been an All-American since his sophomore year, and at that time was the only player to be selected as an All-American three years in high school.

Fellow D-I recruits Derric Evans and Gary Edwards asked Armstead to join them and others in a series of robberies of video stores and fast-food restaurants, but he refused. In September 1989, Evans and Edwards were sentenced to 20 years and 16 years, respectively, in prison.[2]

I can't totally blame the kids.....the late 80's was a time of great indulgence.....Many had and others had nothing. It was also a time when the movie Colors had come out and gang affiliation became nationally known and honestly the cool thing to do. If I am not mistaken, Dallas Carter is in a very rough area of town, and not the richest area around. So, you get this mix of kids wanting to get theirs, wanting to be hard and show they are tough, and at the same time feeling the best way out is on the football field. Unfortunately, these kids didn't seem to have the necessary adult guidance to help keep their heads on straight.......fortunately for Armstead, he was able to make smart decisions for himself and his future.

I think that's the crux of it

The movie isn't about Converse, so of course they got "slighted." Granted, the fib about what the game between Permiand and Carter actually was is a bit misleading, but I don't think it makes the movie "erroneous."

As an aside...are you talking about Judson as in Friday Night Tykes Judson? Didn't that team of like 10 year olds basically cheat in the same way that Carter did? Shouldn't be throwing stones there Biggems haha

Those losers that cheated were dealt with.......and there is a new regime for the Judson Jr. Rockets. Not only were those adults very poor role models and way out of line, but so was that head coach of the Broncos.

I hate the way pee-wee football has evolved. It is supposed to be a fun introduction to football.....teach important traits like hard work, fair play, teamwork, and discipline. It is also supposed to teach the basic fundamentals of football. However, adults have taken over and the kids are treated so harshly. Parents are pushing their kids too hard, as are the coaches, I am talking about elementary school kids. BTW, I feel the same way about little league baseball and basketball.

The cheating angle is probably very overplayed. Carter didn't need to cheat to win. They had a ridiculous talent advantage over just about everyone. Keeping kids eligible happened at almost every school. It wasn't so much about cheating as human nature. Who wants to keep a kid from playing in a state championship game that already has a college scholarship waiting for him?

The kids were all middle class kids that got caught up gambling at lunch time. That gambling led to a large crew of them committing robberies. Kids that had never been in any trouble were committing outrageous felonies. There ended up with a lot of these kids in prison and life altered permanently.

Odessa Permian was not as strong that year. Converse Judson was handed the title after forfeit but had lost 31-14(IIRC) on the field to Carter.
Permian did win in 89 and was very good through the early 90s before tailing off.

That 1989 Carter team is probably the most talented team in the history of the state of Texas. There were 2 or 3 future NFLers(led by Jessie Armstead) on there plus a QB who started at Tech and set records in the CFL. And there were 2 or 3 kids(Derrick Evans was one) as talented that went to prison and missed out on the NFL.

Carter was a beast.....Not only were they talented, but they were big and super fast. Judson was a very good team that year, but Carter was simply great. It is a shame that those kids got caught up in nonsense......However, that is what a lot of kids do, they get caught up in nonsense. That is why it is important to have strong, positive adult influences around, and even then bad things can happen.

It is sad when I see these really talented kids throwing their futures away, and I mean some really bright futures, for a bunch of nonsense and foolishness. It happens all the time, no matter the generation.

I've seen this first hand having been a ref for little league games (3-6 grade) and you've got parents out there treating their children like they should be playing like NFL stars and they're playing for NFL contracts already.

I understand pushing your kids to be their best, encouraging them to do everything they can to improve, but some of these parents are just flat out stupid with the way they act.

dude it is like that at pre-K indoor soccer games.
it starts as soon as they let them compete with adult supervision.

the hardest thing about youth coaching is handling parents.

it is a tough deal because the kids that turn out the best (by high school) often do have parents involved and pushing them a bit.
at the same time there gets a level of crazy you just can't work with.
i had to let a future d1 level talent go because the parents were so over the top(getting kicked out of HOME gyms et al).
