This might be a leap of faith but I feel the "benching" will force Carter to produce and make plays at a high level.
Here's why.
At the beginning of last season, Carter was expected to play well by all training camp accounts from coaches and players. For some reason, he didn't quite ive up to expectations when the season started and Garrett (and Jerry) made it known to the media that he needed to improve his play on the field. There was even a "battle" between Carter and Dan Conner as to who would start at ILB in Rob Ryan's 3-4.
Then the Ravens game happened and Sean Lee, the other ILB and leader of the defense (or LB corps, if folks want to split hairs) went down with an injury and would be forced to IR.
Bruce Carter then was forced to play Lee's position and take on his role out of necessity.
Carter responded by playing his best ball as a pro and looked like an absolute beast. Albeit, for a short time. His play last year is what's caused folks to be disappointed in his performance early this year.
I'm sure there are a few theories as to why he looks a little off.
My thought is that he needed some extra motivation by way of being held accountable, similar to last year. He's playing the correct position for sure. He has all the tools to be an all-pro at WLB.
This benching will bring a sense of urgency to Carter and prove to be the best thing for him. I believe we'll see a different player come Sunday and the rest of the season...fingers crossed.
