New year, first mock.

Gonna update in the coming months.

1. Pick 30
Jer'Zhan Newton
DT Illinois

Height: 6 - 2 | Weight: 290 |

Jer'Zhan Newton is coming off a career-best campaign that saw him earn 61 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, three pass deflections, and two fumble recoveries. At 6’2″, 295 pounds, he has the versatility to rush inside or use burst, ankle flexion, and active, surgical hands to work around the apex. Through it all, he’s strong and stout enough to disrupt in the run game as well.

Newton is best alongside a nose tackle who can encumber blocks, but he himself is unnaturally proficient at prying through congestion and squirming through blocks to make stops. Newton’s hyper-elite flexibility is a 1-of-1 trait that makes him a perplexingly slippery opponent for even the strongest offensive linemen.

My opinion: The Mazi Project is not off to a good start. Hes still very young and raw so the jury is out for him for atleast another 2 seasons, but Newton is the guy that could fit very well besides Mazi. He reminds me of Chris Jones and has Pass Rush Ability from inside but is also good against the run. Cowboys still only run defending inside player is old Henkins and thats not the future.

Alternative Pick: OG Troy Fautanu Washington. Best pure Guard in the Draft, but i still see the need at OC and T much bigger as long as they dont commit Tyler Smith to replace Tyron at LT it doesnt make sense to draft a pure OG this early next season. Martin is still good for another two years. Fautanu cant play T at the NFL Level.

2. Pick 61
Sedrick Van Pran
OC Georgia

Height: 6 - 4 | Weight: 310 |

Sedrick Van Pran would have contended with Joe Tippmann and John Michael Schmitz as the first center off the board in the NFL Draft. Van Pran is an excellent mover who possesses an innate ability to pursue the correct angle at the second level while also having the lower-body composition and power to be a difference-maker at the first level.

My opinion: Biadasz will be gone in FA and this guy can be better longterm.

3. Pick 93
Braelon Allen
RB Wisconsin

Height: 6 - 2 | Weight: 238

Has elite overall size, and will be just 20 years old as an NFL rookie.
Can easily absorb and bounce off solo hits with his tightly-packed midsection.
High-level goal-line back with his size and mass, and can plow through the trenches.

This is the Derrick Henry type of workhorse back that we need so Pollard can be great again as the Change of Pace back while having a true workhorse.

7. Pick 201
Ainias Smith
WR Texas A&M

Height: 5 - 9 | Weight: 197

A coach’s dream (does ALL the dirty work)
Used as a sniffer and is a willing run blocker against LARGE humans
Experience at both WR and RB
Very willing pass protector -

7. Pick 222
Josh Proctor
S Ohio State

Hight: 6 -2 | Weight: 205

6 year vet that does his job, is very reliable. Can play ST as a gunner. Posted 47 Tackles this season (Career High), with a Pick 6.

Right now Cowboys dont own Picks in Round 4-6. Compensatory Picks are not announced yet.

Not sure how you can come out of this draft and not take an OT.

We have an OT problem. Steele is scuffling and there is no guarantee he'll get better. And counting on Tyron Smith to stay healthy in 2024?

I just dont see one that helps us and is available when we pick in terms of value. If we get Comp Picks in the mid rounds i would draft one in Round 3 or 4 .

So the OT from Washington, Oregon State or Duke was not there at 30?

I get it though, Newton looks like a nice prospect (and honestly, in some of the mocks, he's gone in the Top 15) but with the OL issues, I am not sure we can go DT yet again 1st round.

The Washington and Duke Kids are Guards and dont project as T on the next level and the Oregon State Kid is not a 1st Round Talent imo

OSU kid is mocked in first round in most drafts I've seen.

Yeah, the Duke kid is probably kind of a clone of Martin in the sense he can probably play OT but could be really good at OG.

Unless OP is high on Asim Richards to be the LOT. Or Dallas plays musical chairs with Tyler again and kicks him out to LOT

Steele will get another shot next year at least as the undisputed ROT.
Dallas will still probably hope Waldo can last a preseason without blowing out one of his shoulders.

I hate Braelon Allen, but it's hard to argue with Newton/VanPran. If you're not going to go OT, this is a good way to go.

I love Ainais Smith, but if he tests well I don't think he'll be there that late.

Something about Allen doesn't sit well with me either. There are some backs that you might be able to get later than the 3rd round intrigue me more.

Although I’d love an OT out of this deep class, definitely wouldn’t want to pass up Newton in late 1. If Newton isn’t there I’d look at Kingsley Sumaiata out of BYU.

Not in love with Braelon Allen like I thought I would be back when he was a freshman. Would rather spend a mid-late on Estime out of ND and if going with a RB in 3 someone like Marshawn Lloyd who is a home run threat to replace Pollard.

1. Newton will be gone.
2. He's the same position/type as Odighizuwa, albeit a better version.

We don't need another gap penetrator. We need gap control. We can't continue to put smallish defenders out there and then be mystified when this team can't stop the run.

I’d be shocked if Newton was available when we pick…he’ll likely go top 15.

It’s a loaded OT class…give me the best one that falls.

He's basically just effective in straight lines. Nothing he does well really translates to the NFL. This whole thread is a pretty good take on him, I think, but this post in particular.

People also act like he's some hammer of a runner but a) he's not, despite his size and b) that doesn't really matter in the NFL anyway.

Kind of curious about that stuff rush rate.

I'd be curious to see what Estime's stuffed rush rate is.

Newton isn't falling to us. J'Vondre Sweat will be there and will be a beast in the NFL.

Van Pran would be a home run. But he won't fall to our 2nd round pick

Braelon Allen is taylor made for this offense. I love his size and he also has speed.

Taking a Tackle all depends upon how they feel about their prospects in house. As for Center, if Biaz leaves, they have virtually nothing at the position.

I think Bass could make the move over an offseason.

I really like the Braelon Allen pick. Is 3rd round correct for him? I was just reading ESPN’s Top 100 college players and he was about #90 so sounds right, I’m also assuming we sign Pollard cheaply. That’s a possible thunder/lightning combo there.

I believe he is more of a phone booth player and isn’t good on the move, which he would need to be at he center position. As a guard he fits much better
