Cassel should sign that franchise tag once its given to him. thats 14 mil guaranteed for 1 yr of service. Its obvious the patriots are doing this to dictate where he signs, and of course get something in return.

I think woodson did that to the raiders a couple yrs ago.

That might be cutting off his nose to spite his face. If he allows the Patriots to shop him around, he could very well end up with a team offering him a contract for a far greater value.

How much money would be tied up in the QB position for the Pats if Cassell is indeed franchised? Brady has a big contract. If the Pats do want to keep him or can't trade him or Brady, they will have very little cap room to fix the holes on their team. Obviously they are a good organization, but we aren't talking chump change here. They will be paying a hefty amount for two QBs.

Would you be interested in purchasing one?

I saw yesterday that they'd have 29 million tied up in those two if Cassel is franchised and they don't move him. 14 for Cassel and 15 for Brady.

That's a huge chunk of cap space tied up into two people. Then you figure in that Moss probably hits them for another 8-10 million on the cap and all the sudden 3 players take up roughly 40 million in cap space.

I don't think it is feasible for the Pats to tie him up by offering him the franchise tender. Cassell isn't all that and a bag of chips, so the Pats would be taking a huge risk that they would be stuck with him and not be able to trade him.

I think he's in a pretty good position. $14 million guaranteed is still great money. And if Brady stays healthy and Cassel doesn't play, Cassel's value will still likely go up. It may not be where it would've been had he gone to another team, but he also has $14 million now and that should make up for any difference.

if I were him id want to be a free agent now.....his demand will never be higher....there may be 8 teams who would sign him as a starter now....if he were to faulter next year he may lose all value...ie D Anderson.....

If the Pats put the franchise tag on Cassell (which they WILL do) then Cassell will have no choice but to accept it. It's not a contract offer where they can negotiate with each other.

Once the Pats do that, they will own his rights. Then they can trade him for the best offer they get. That team will then negotiate a new long term deal with him.

That means Cassell won't be a free agent and likely won't have much say where he ultimately ends up for the next few years. And the Pats......they just pile up a couple of high draft picks.

That's not entirely accurate. If the Patriots franchise Cassell, they don't have exclusive rights to him. He is not under contract and can speak to other teams. And any team can sign him to any deal he agrees to - only that will cost that team 2 1st rounders (plus the Pats would get the right to match the offer). Is any team willing to pay so high a price? Maybe, maybe not. Personally I doubt it.

He's a restricted free agent but realistically speaking, the Patriots are looking to trade him (unless Brady's injury is worse than we think). So he will have a lot of say about where he goes because no team is going to trade for him unless they have a deal with him in place.
