Today’s posts will reveal each poster’s true fan personality, whether they realize it or not. I posit to you that there are four types of fan in the wake of this momentous victory, and the posts we see today will clearly shine the light on which category each falls into:
1. The True Believer. These fans have believed all along that Cowboys were on a positive trajectory. I envy them. They were truly vindicated by this victory.
2. The Doubting Thomas. These fans didn’t know what to think about this team, and given recent history, could not accept that this year might be different. These “Doubting Thomas’s” have seen and now believe. Unfortunately, you can count me in this category. Some Wafflers may still be on the fence, but I have a feeling that most are climbing up on the bandwagon. Make room.
3. The Somewhat Intelligent Cynic. These fans have been critical of the team all along and are loath to embrace any positivity. However, they are intelligent enough to remain quiet today for fear that they will be called out as having been wrong. They value the feeling of being right over the rejoicing when the team is doing well but will retreat and re-emerge as soon as the headwinds show up again.
4. The Egotist. These are the fans who remain critical of the team and will continue to highlight the negatives of the team in multiple posts today. They value being right over almost any other outcome, no matter how beneficial or impressive. These folks will cling to any data point that may support the idea that they are right, even in the wake of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. They cannot see the forest through the trees. The sweetest words in the English language to them are, “I told you so.” They cannot enjoy any victory because it does not comport with their world view that they are always right. At work, we have a term for these individuals: “often wrong, never in doubt.”
Just one man’s opinion … but the masks are off.
