If you get a chance...you gotta watch this. I usually don't pump up a program....but this is must watch TV on the NFL Network.

Myself being almost 45 years old and a semi historian/draftnik and fan of 35 years.....this was a little before my time....

But the names and the influences to the league that came out of this program was just remarkable.

A lot of Cowboy news that I never knew ...and how the draft used to be conducted.

Even to this day......this draft from 1964 is still making it's mark though some of the coaches still employed in the league.

There are 4 more programs scanning the league from the years 1974, 84 ,94 and 2004. I can only hope the rest of the series can live up to this.

Might have been the best program I've ever seen on the NFL network. Just thought I'd pass along for your enjoyment.

Calling the difference night and day from 1964 to now is not in any way sufficient. You look at how it was done even in the late 70's in comparison and its still nothing to what it is now. The story on us drafting Staubach is a case in point. It was almost an impulse thing.

Watch the show if you get the chance... no time limits for teams drafting... 12 Hall of Famers from that draft... Staubach wasn't necessarily an impulse pick... however, they mention that he probably would've went undrafted if Dallas hadn't picked him... They drafted college RB, Mel Renfro, and turned him into a HOF CB... They talk about how Tex Schram was ahead of the curve by using computers.......by the way, I think the night and day analogy was sufficient:)

Tough to argue with Renfro, Bob Hayes and Roger the Dodger all in the 64 draft. Is it possible that any 3 players drafted by any one team in one draft has ever been better ?

11 or 12 HOFers from the 64 draft right?

11.....

What I found most amusing was after we drafted Bob Hayes......in the 7th round (pick number 88)....The Detroit Lions selected a tackle out of Witchita St. ..........
Bill Parcells w/ the 89th pick. yup.....that Bill Parcells;)

Side note - he never played in the NFL. After being cut he went into coaching.

I remember reading the day after the draft and seeing Staubach. TBH, I wondered why they made the pick. There was no way to go back and see film of Staubach. I only remember him from the Army-Navy game and the bowl game that year.

If You ever get the chance to read Don Perkins book "Winning the Big One" (it has had a couple of different titles over the years) it talks about the Staubach pick. It was just about impulse.

It is no mystery how ahead of the curve we were in the draft in that era. I am surprised you did not know this.

Dallas was one of the few teams that took it seriously. By the late 1970s, other teams woke up when they saw what Dallas and Pittsburgh had done.

When I first started getting into the draft, the kickoff were the BLESTO ratings. You do not even see that anymore. Now you get Kiper's Big Board and even worse McShay's garbage.

Dallas first round draft pick Scott Appleton chose to play with the AFL's Houston Oilers instead of the Cowboys. He didn't have much of a career. Perhaps he he got to play alongside Bob Lily he would have faired better. He is probably the reason Dallas doesn't like to draft players from the University of Texas. :D

Somehow I had completely forgot about that. As least there is an alternative to the mouthpieces at the 4 letter network. At least their agendas aren't so blatant.

yeah...the Network showed a small clip of him trying to block. I laughed out loud. Bill wasn't much of an athlete.

Yeah. I think he was known as Duane back then. And he played like it too.

The news I was referring to was ......I thought they took breaks between rounds. Nope....Just kept going. Non stop until 20 rounds are complete. A team could be on the clock for hours...which the Cowboys did when they selected Mel Renfro. I hadn't heard the story of how the Cowboys were trying to find Renfro's Dr. to see how bad an old injury was. Cowboys couldn't find the Dr. So they almost passed on him.
