Stillman's Witherspoon earns All-America honors

TUSCALOOSA | Stillman College defensive back Brian Witherspoon was named a first-team All-American by D2football.com, the publication announced Wednesday.

Witherspoon, a senior from Butler, had three interceptions and 14 tackles for the Tigers in 2006, despite missing six games because of injury.

“It feels great getting this type of recognition, considering I missed the majority of the season because I was hurt," Witherspoon said. “It just lets me know that all of the hard work has been paying off and this will definitely motivate me to work even harder this season."

Witherspoon, perhaps better known on a national scale from his track and field accomplishments, became Stillman’s first NCAA Division II All-American in 2006 when he ran a 10.31 in the 100 meters at the national championships. Now he is the school’s first two-sport All-American, although his coach feels the best is yet come.

“We’re certainly not surprised that he’s been recognized on a national level yet again," coach Greg Thompson said. “There’s no question that he’s deserving of such an achievement because Brian is a tremendous athlete.

“[Denatay] Heard and Witherspoon both have been getting a lot of attention from the pro scouts since the beginning of last season. So we expect them to have a big year for us as they continue to progress."

Witherspoon was also named second-team preseason All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference by the league’s Coaches Association last month.

Witherspoon's career stats:

Games played: 22

Interceptions: 6

Tackles: 42

Pass deflections: 15

Forced fumbles: 3

Touchdowns: 1

Kick returns: 28

Return yards: 772

Return TDs: 3

• If there is one certainly when it comes to the NFL Draft it's that if you can run you are going to get an opportunity. The latest example of that might be Stillman cornerback Brian Witherspoon, who figures to be one of the fastest ( if not the fastest ) prospects available come next April.

Witherspoon doesn't have great size or bulk (5-10, 180) and he has not played against top competition but few can match his reported 4.2 speed which is why he could wind up being an interesting sleeper prospect for the '08 Draft. After starting out at Alabama State, where he did not play football, Witherspoon transferred to Stillman in 2004 and has since developed into an All-American on the gridiron as well as in track. Oh, and for good measure he played a little baseball for the Tigers as well! Witherspoon will still have to answer questions about whether he is just a track guy playing football or vise versa but providing he can add some weight he has the recovery speed, burst and fluid hips to play at the next level and if nothing else he is also an electrifying return man and could contribute in that capacity. Just in case his name wasn't already on the map Witherspoon put it there this past weekend against Benedict, where in his final home game he returned a kickoff for a touchdown, intercepted a pass, blocked a kick and forced a fumble. Now that is an impact performance! Witherspoon will try and wrangle an invite to a post-season all-star game but assuming he can hold his own there and confirm that blazing speed for scouts in workouts Witherspoon would not only be a draftable prospect but a guy who could shoot up draft boards in the coming months.
