I haven't seen this kid play, but this scout loves him.
Here's an analysis (in my own words):

Positives:

- Size and Speed. He's a big physical corner that can handle large receivers.

- Leadership. Has good character and is a leader of his team.

- Fearless. He's a great tackler. He has no problem with supporting the run.

- High Ceiling. He's still improving and has a lot of skills to work with. Every game he got better than the previous game.

- Versatile. Because he's such a big and physical corner, he could easily play safety in a pinch.

- Lastly, the scout actually guaranteed that this kid will be a future probowl player at the CB or Safety position.

Negatives:

- Technique. Needs to improve his technique.

- Recognition and Reaction. He struggles with overall recognition, because he may be thinking to much instead of reacting naturally. This causes him to look less quick than he actually is.

- Position He has the size and skills to excel as a NFL CB or FS, but a team needs to decide early which one they want him to play and give him the repetitions he'll need in order to refine his technique.

Final Analysis:

- The kid is going to be good, but he's going to go through some growing pains as he refines his techniques and learns to rely on his instincts to improve his reaction time. Any team that picks this kid shouldn't think you made a mistake. He's going to be a great player. Going into the combine, he's probably going to carry a 2nd rd grade on most teams boards, but after they see his athletic ability he'll probably carry a late 1st rd grade. He has the size, speed, cover skills, and tackling ability to excel as a FS, but most of his negatives show up when he's at the CB position. However, his negatives aren't the result of a lack of ability or athletic talent. He just needs repetition and a little refinement that comes with experience. He's a smart player, a team player, and a leader who is passionate for the game and has a strong work ethic. All he needs is repetition and experience and he's going to be a future pro bowl player. If your team uses a high pick on him, don't be mad, and if your team uses a low pick on him, then you just got great value. The truth is, he could be selected in any number of rounds based on what position teams will be projecting him to play. If a team wants a big, physical, CB to handle those big WRs then he'll go relatively high. If teams view him as a FS, then that'll push him into the 2nd rd or even later.

I read something similar on thehuddlereport.com. :)

Godfrey would be a pretty sweet pick up in the second round IF Dallas was to sign Pacman . They'd have some pretty good depth at DB .

NFL SCOUTING COMBINE SUMMARY
Baytown's Godfrey impresses Texans

By JOHN McCLAIN
Copyright 2008 Houston Chronicle

Iowa cornerback Charles Godfrey grew up in Baytown and played at Lee High School. He's 6-0, 207 pounds and expects to run the 40-yard dash in the 4.3s on Tuesday. He hopes to play for his favorite team.

Godfrey is such a big Texans fan that he has their logo tattooed on his right hand.

"That's my team," he said. "I'm from Texas. That's our NFL team.

A big thumbs down to this loser.

He had the slowest shuttle time and 2nd slowest cone time among corners at the Combine. A corner with no agility doesn't excite me at all.

His last season in college he had 40 balls caught on him. Thats pretty high for a college corner. Seems like a 4th-7th round pick to me.

Maybe we can amputate the hand and give him some kind of lobotomy/bionic hand transplant surgery combo.

I found this on Godfrey.

Cornerback | Senior | Iowa Charles Godfrey
Height: 5-113/4 | Weight: 207 | 40-Time: 4.44

Official Bio

Strengths:
Has excellent size with a solid frame and long arms...Outstanding timed speed...A fantastic athlete...Real quick with a burst to close...Very good ball skills...Is strong and tough...Physical and aggressive...A reliable tackler...Will deliver the big hit...Is versatile with experience at two positions...Still improving and has a huge upside.

Weaknesses:
Extremely raw and still learning the position...Has to work on his technique when it comes to footwork and positioning...Marginal instincts and awareness...Doesn't play as fast as he times...Inconsistent and gives up too many big plays...He relies too heavily on his natural talent...Risky and might be a bit of a "Workout Warrior".

Notes:
Older brother El Roberson played quarterback at Kansas State...He played safety early in his college career and only moved to corner in '06...Finally started to fulfill his potential as a senior...Will test through the roof and it'll be easy to fall in love with his measurables but he is still somewhat of a developmental guy...He'll likely be chosen relatively early based more on potential than actual college production.

LOL, that would work...

Has anyone seen the movie Casino, where they catch the cheaters? I can see Jerry playing Ace in that scene... :D

Seriously, any time people talk about how "versatile" a corner is because he could be moved to safety, that's a huge red flag for me. When do you *ever* hear that about really top corners? Never. You only contemplate such a move when a player isn't athletic enough to play corner.

Doesn't sound very smart either...

i like the part where he said "I'm from texas this is our team"

he aint from texas if he thinks the Texans is "our" team. Dallas is not only texas teams. Its America's team.

More on him...

Analysis

Positives:
Rare combination of size and speed. ... Well-built athlete who has the physique of a safety and track star speed. ... Versatile, having played his first two seasons at safety before making the transition to cornerback for his junior and senior seasons. ... Flashed ability previously in his career, but enjoyed a breakout senior campaign. ... Rare pure speed. ... Significant improvement as a senior in terms of technique, play recognition and creating turnovers. ... Physical defender. ... Reliable open-field tackler who aggressively supports the run from his cornerback position. ... Good initial quickness and physicality to re-route the receiver. ... Smooth transition to run downfield. ... Effective in zone coverage. ... Reads the quarterback's eyes and can break on the ball to make plays. ... Learned to use his hands much more effectively as a senior, improving from two INTs and five pass break-ups to five INTs and nine break-ups in second season at cornerback. ... Still learning the nuances of the position, but possesses legitimate upside. ... Hard worker. ... Team leader.

Negatives: Still a bit raw after only playing cornerback for two seasons. ... Elite timed speed, but this speed isn't always evident on the field. ... Faster than he is quick. ... Improved as a senior, but doesn't always recognize the play as quickly as scouts would like, showing only marginal break on the ball despite his experience and athleticism.

Glad you pointed that out.

I was going to ask about his overall speed and quick burst.

Why would a potential pro football player do something like this......I hope he gets drafted by Titans or some other rival. His wonderlick scores must not be too high

when you fail at the most important aspect of playing the cornerback position, recognition and reaction, you are no better then reeves.

He was #6 on that list of the dry erase board DBs that Stewie has standing in front of in that picture from last week.

I go to the University of Iowa and have been a student there for three years now. I have seen Godfrey play in every game. This is probably the one and only time on this board that I'm going to have the most information about a prospect.

If anyone has any questions about him, ask away and I'll do my best to answer.

That being said, for the most part the scouting is fairly accurate. The first report is a bit homerish, but still fairly accurate. I dont know about future Pro Bowler, but he will be a productive player, make no mistake about it.

Some things I want to note, is he is a very good tackler. Very good. Very physical. He is an ideal Cover 2 corner, but thats not saying he can't be successful in different schemes.
His main weakness, as stated is ball recognition. He isnt at his best when the ball is in the air. I dont know if its the coaching at Iowa, but our corners have never had great skills while the ball is in the air.

The 2nd scouting report offered that was posted by BlueStar is kind of contradicting. It says he has good ball skills (which I disagree with) yet then says that he gets beat too often. He got beat more than I would have hoped, but nothing too bad. Then again the way Iowa's defense played this past year, it would be hard not too.

*And in response to theogt, he had 40 balls caught on him because the Iowa offense was inept and could not stay on the field. That and they play a bend dont break defense that is going to give up completed passes. Problem is, the past year, they bended too far, often breaking and allowing TD's.
