He was cut by New England who had traded for him from Chicago (conditional pick). Dallas had been involved in the trade talk for him but Chicago chose to trade him to New England (out of NFC). I think he may be Jerry's target. I wouldnt be surprise if Kraft (Jerry's buddy) gave him the head's up that NE was cutting Wesley, so Jerry felt comfortable cutting Glenn. Just a theory. No links. We'll see.

My bad, not a trade target, but a free agent signing target. Wouldnt doubt Jerry had a call into his agent before he was cut if Kraft gave him the head's up.

That would be tampering.

[Default] Patriots cuts (Richard Seymour to PUP)...
http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=090...o&confirm=true

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots activated tight end David Thomas off the PUP list today. They also announced the release of 21 players. In addition, the team placed defensive lineman Richard Seymour on the reserve/physically unable to perform list and placed rookie linebacker Oscar Lua on the reserve/injured list. The Patriots are in compliance with the NFL?s regular-season roster limit.

The Patriots released RB Larry Anam, LB Chad Brown, WR Bam Childress, WR Chris Dunlap, G/C Mike Elgin, T Corey Hilliard, TE Brian Jones, WR C.J. Jones, WR Kelvin Kight, LB Corey Mays, TE Garrett Mills, DL Rashad Moore, G/C Gene Mruczkowski, T Clint Oldenburg, TE Marcellus Rivers, LB Justin Rogers, RB Quinton Smith, QB Vinny Testaverde, DL Santonio Thomas, CB Dante Wesley and DL Zach West.

------

This means Seymour will miss the first 6 weeks, right? That would mean he will not be active when we host the Pats in week 6.

A few weeks ago, Cowboys inquired about trading for CB Dante Wesley

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Coach has little confidence in CBs

Aaron Glenn said he thinks the Cowboys have a good group of cornerbacks. Wade Phillips disagreed after watching Glenn, Jacques Reeves and Alan Ball get beat for touchdowns tonight.
"We played a lot [of guys] at corner to see who would do something," Phillips said, "and we didn't see anything."

Phillips said this week that he was concerned about the lack of quality depth at cornerback. Consider it a huge problem if Terence Newman's plantar faciitis doesn't get better.
The Cowboys attempted to address the issue earlier this month. They inquired about trading for Dante Wesley, but the Bears opted to send him to New England for a conditional seventh-rounder.

So far, claiming this guy off waivers looks like the most likely scenario. Of course, we all hope some other deal is in the works that will bring a more talented CB in.

Does anyone know much about Dante Wesley? My Lindy's claimed he couldn't cover, but was a good STs player.

Patriots Add Veteran CB Dante Wesley to the Secondary
http://www.football.com/patriotsaddveterancbdantewesleytothesecondary.html

The New England Patriots acquired cornerback Dante Wesley from the Chicago Bears August 8th for an undisclosed draft choice. Originally a fourth round pick of the Carolina Panthers in 2002, Wesley will add depth and experience to the New England secondary.

After four seasons in Carolina, Wesley signed with the Chicago Bears in March 2006. The majority of his impact came on special teams coverage. Due to the Bears boatload of talent at cornerback, Wesley was somewhat expendable. New England will gladly take him.

For his part, Wesley is excited about joining the Pats. "I feel like if they make it to the Super Bowl, they're always going to win. I’m here now, so hopefully we make it and have a chance to win," said Wesley.

Wesley has played in two Super Bowls but has yet to win a ring. His addition to the team comes at a good time. The New England secondary is missing Pro Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel who is holding out for more money. In addition, veteran corner Chad Scott suffered a devastating knee injury and is lost for the season. As it stands now, Ellis Hobbs and Randall Gay will likely start.

Wesley should compete for playing time with fellow newcomer Tory James. Wesley figures to contribute in special teams coverage as well. The former standout from the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff appears determined to make an impact this season.

Pats Trade for CB Dante Wesley
http://www.mattspatsblog.com/?p=444

The Patriots have acquired CB Dante Wesley from the Chicago Bears for a conditional draft choice.

Wesley, a 6 year veteran, joins a thin group of corners on the Pats, though he will most likely contribute most on special teams. Another thought is that he will primarily play safety, with Brandon Meriweather moving to corner. His scouting report from ESPN.com reads as follows:

Wesley has very good size and he plays a physical game at the corner position. He does an excellent job with the jam technique and also in press coverage. He has very good upper body strength and he has the ability to muscle a receiver out of his route. He uses his hands well in block protection and he gets good separation from receivers with his long arms. He is a little bit stiff in his hips and he is not smooth in his transition. He is a bit of a long strider and he lacks initial foot quickness. He has very good running ability but he lacks a burst or the ability to accelerate. He does not have ideal top end speed for the position and he does not show the ability to make up for a mistake in coverage. He has difficulty at times judging the long ball and he is at his best when he is close to the line of scrimmage. He is an aggressive hitter and he can break down and make tackles in the open field however he lacks great change of direction skills. He plays a critical role on special teams and he might be a better fit at the safety position where he can keep everything in front of him.
