This is obviously an area of need for the Cowboys, but thanks to the signing of Brandon Carr, not the urgent need it was... the Boys don't have to use a first or even a second round pick to address the issue... this is doubly true when you factor in that there are quality corners sprinkled through literally every round of this draft...
In the first round, Morris Claiborne of LSU will be gone, but Dre Kirkpatrick from
Alabama and Stephon Gilmore from South Carolina will likely be on the board at pick 14... I read a little earlier today that Kirkpatrick has folks inside Valley Ranch lobbying for him... however, I'll be kind of surprised if the Boys go this way with their first round pick...
Second round prospects would include speedy Josh Robinson from Central Florida, or Trumaine Johnson, a big corner from Montana who might project to free safety...
In the 3rd round, you could choose from Brandon Boykin from Georgia (who has slid down draft boards because he got hurt at the wrong time, and thus might be a steal here) or Casey Heyward from Vanderbilt...
In the 4th round, there's Rob Ryan favorite Leonard Johnson from Iowa and my pet cat, Chase Minnifield from Virginia... Chase is another kid who has been victimized by getting hurt at the worst possible time... at the start of the season, he was a late first/early 2nd round prospect on most draft boards, now he seems to be carrying a consensus 4th or 5th round grade... if he's on the board when the Boys make that second 4th round pick, he'll be an absolute steal...
Don't like much of any of the corners carrying 5th round grades, but there are four I like carrying 6th round grades-- Donnie Fletcher from Boston College, Brandon Hardin from Oregon State, Ron Brooks from LSU or Asa Jackson from Cal-Poly... some project Hardin to FS (he's 6'3, 215), but I think he has the speed and agility to stay on the corner and match up with big wideouts...
There would be one 7th rounder worth considering, fast-rising Chris Greenwood from tiny Albion... he has all the computer numbers to make the scouts drool, but he's trying to make a biiiig jump in competition...
Even after the draft, you can find some interesting corners likely to be looking for work... you've got Greg McCoy from TCU, Robert Golden from Arizona (who might project to FS in the NFL), Corey White from Samford, Isaac Madison from Arkansas, and Desmond Marrow from Toledo...
Yeah, there's an embarrassment of riches at cornerback this year (compared to most other years), the Boys should take advantage of that... draft one early, draft one late, sign one or two as UDRFAs... Minnifield in the 4th, Fletcher or Hardin in the 6th (I keep going back and forth between the two of them there), Golden and Marrow as UDRFAs... throw in that vet we signed, I think his name was Brandon Carr, and you've got yourself a whole boatload of competition for our incumbent corners... Jenkins and Scandrick probably wouldn't need to worry, but every other corner on the team would be, big time...
