Frank Bodani: Knowledge Timmons gains speed, has solid post-PSU plan
William Penn grad Knowledge Timmons claims to have gotten faster and he has a great fall back plan should the NFL not be a part of his future.

One of the fastest athletes to ever come out of York County says he just got a little faster.
William Penn's Knowledge Timmons stood in a Harrisburg hotel the other day, waiting to sign autographs at a Big 33 fundraising event.

He talked about his successes, none bigger than earning a degree from Penn State.

He talked of his failures, such as getting into trouble during the middle of his rocky career.

And he talked of his future.

Timmons has spent the past couple of months working out in Lancaster with football training guru Steve Saunders of Power Train Sports Performance.

Timmons is getting ready to give pro football his best shot.

Which means that the former high school state sprint champion says he's added some speed.

How much?

Well, Timmons' best hand-held 40-yard time at Penn State was 4.37 seconds. And that's really fast, though teammates Stephfon Green, Susquehannock's Chaz Powell and Derek Moye apparently all posted faster times.

Timmons, dressed in a sharp gray suit the other day, just smiled.

He's faster now.

But, "I don't really want anybody to know my speed right now. I want it to be a surprise."

And what about having only the fourth-fastest time on the team?

"I'm glad those guys actually took it serious enough to want to go out there and run faster than the guy who is the fastest on the team."

Timmons smiled even wider.

He's excited about his possibilities, none bigger than Wednesday's

workout in front of NFL scouts at Penn State's "pro day."
If he runs his 40-yard test in the low-to-mid 4.30's, as expected, Timmons should garner a free agent contract or at least an NFL mini-camp invite this spring.

Run even faster, in the 4.22 range? And show well enough in position drills?

"He'll get drafted late," said Kip Washington, who runs KLW Athlete Management in Manassas, Va., the agency representing Timmons.

Timmons is fast and physical, which at least could be the basis of a pro football career on special teams.

But the best part? If that doesn't work, he can still use his education to get into athletic administration and possibly coach.

"If the league doesn't work out, I want to move away from York and establish myself and then come back."

So it's not a huge deal that Timmons was mostly just a special teams standout at Penn State.

"Everything didn't work out, but I made it through and graduated ..."

That's the crucial part. Consider how many athletes, how many promising students, grow up in York City in broken homes and never get close to what Timmons has earned.

A lot of kids like him don't survive their biggest mistakes and push ahead and hang in there.

They don't have a legitimate life fall-back plan at age 24.

Timmons talked about this the other day and said he's glad to be done with college, proud that he earned his degree, excited to prove doubters wrong in the workplace and on the football field.

He may truly be faster now.

He may get that shot at the NFL.

And yet, in a way, all of that really doesn't matter as much as you might think it does.

That is the most telling part of this story, the very best part.

Penn St fan, from Timmons neck of the woods. Real fmailiary with his family and product on the field in High School and College.

He has no position and no chance in the NFL and it kills me to say it.

I'll be honest, he is the classic under achiever. I dont know, maybe with the right coach and in the right situations some one can get him to work hard, walk a straight line and take this game seriously.
