I know neither will be on the board when we pick. However, I am curious which one you would choose and why. Please leave the conversation to these two prospects. I am not interested in knowing about other CB or S prospects from the 2008 Draft.

As for my thoughts.....based on the Boom/Bust ratios for 1st rounders, Safety is the safest pick. If I am going to be forking over 1st round money, I want the safest bet for my investment. Therefore, I take Kenny Phillips. Also, even if we were to resign Hamlin....Phillips would merely take away Keith Davis' job. If Roy starts stinkin it up again next year, we would now have the flexibility to bench him, move Hamlin to SS and let Phillips play FS. Additionally, this draft is not very deep at the S position, but it is extremely deep at the CB position.

Now your thoughts.

Mike Jenkins. Because we need a corner and he's a better corner. If we don't re-sign Hamlin, my opinion might change.

Give me a fraction of a second to think about this. Ok, made up my mind.

Mike Jenkins CB South Florida
STRENGTHS
Mike has excellent athletic talent along with size and speed to play his position. He shows good quickness to go along with his speed. He does a great job in man-to-man coverage and shows good intelligence and instincts to play zone coverage also. Mike does a solid job when called upon to tackle on sweeps. He shows a great burst to the ball and is excellent when using his hands on the bump and run technique. Mike has improved every year I have seen him. He has gotten bigger and stronger and has improved his fundamentals in tackling. Mike has good potential to be a Pro Bowl CB for the team that drafts him.

NEEDS TO IMPROVE

I’m not sure how good Mike’s hands are to make an interception and he needs a little more technique work when he turns and runs with a WR. He seems to have a good work ethic and all in all, I doubt this is going to be a big problem at the next level. Mike needs to continue to stay away from altercations outside of bars. This could be a sticking point for some teams.

TALENT BOARD ROUND 1

In this day and age, you need a big CB to play the big WR’s. Mike is just that type of CB. He is tall and strong with good speed and quickness. He is smart and shows intelligence along with having a stand-out work ethic. Mike has done a solid job on special teams and no doubt will be able to help the team that drafts him right away in this regard, as he learns better techniques and gains his confidence. Every team in the NFL needs a CB like Mike. Mike is really going to jump up on every one’s board when he works out at the Senior Bowl and combine. I think he is a lot quicker than most people realize. I think what I like most about Mike’s game this year is how well he has improved making tackles and defending against the sweep. You can’t teach this. A player has to want to stop that play from happening. He has to do it because pride makes him want to do it. The easiest way to stop the sweep for a CB is to identify the play, get into the back field and turn it in before it has a real chance to swallow you up in the wake of blockers that are a hell of a lot bigger than you will ever be. Mike has done an excellent job jumping on this play this year and not waiting for it to swallow him up. I think he realizes that getting into the backfield as quickly as possible and turning this play in for others to make the tackle limits your personal risk of injury.

BTW, IMO Jenkins doesn't get past the Saints....if he is even able to get past the Pats.

I don't think he makes it past the Pats either.

Kenny Phillips and its not even close.... Unless your content with watching Roy getting toasted draft a safety that truly has range and can hit. Not quite Sean Taylor coming out of Miami.. but closer than anything thats come out recently..

Wouldn't surprise me if both are off the board when we pick.

If we resign Hamlin this is a mute point, but I have seen every game Phillips has played..being a big UM fan. But I like his game. Good speed and good range. Could also play some corner.

7 overall is a little high for Mike Jenkins.

Not when the Cheatriots* are picking 7th. There is only one other position that they would pick if not Jenkins at CB, and thats linebacker. This draft isn't exactly top heavy with linebackers. I can only see two LBers that should go in the first round, the others could (and probably will) drop into the second around. Jenkins is the best player avaiable between him and the linebackers. My bet, Jenkins with the 7th pick.

Kenny Phillips should be the better fit in Dallas @ free safety and move Ken Hamlin to strong and just trade Roy Williams off for the pick you would get Kenny Phillips with.

You would pick the safety based on the boom/bust ratios. Then you would have picked Roy W over Tnewman eh?

I wouldn't take Phillips unless I was certain that he could play corner at a very high level. Taking him to play safety would be dumb imo.
