Weird mock, especially first few picks and with Saquan Barkley going 16th. Barkley is a better version of Zeke and I don't just mean the off-field stuff.

Would hate it if we took James Washington over Taven Bryan, Arden Key, Nick Chubb, Clelin Ferrell, and Harold Landry. Hate it.

i really like washington though 10th is too high.
he would be a true deep threat not a jump ball threat.
we can move on from bryant and we have multiple route runners.

ii do agree that if we pick that high we have other position problems

Rather go Bryan(3tech) or Chubb(Edge) over Washington.
That D-line still needs an infusion of talent.

My only issue here is that people are falling into that trap that we have to go defense with the #1 pick.

We don't. We have enough needs that we can still take the BPA. If that is a WR, you take the WR. Shoot, if it's an OG, you take the OG.

Ideally, of course, you'd like the BPA on the board to be a DT or S or LB IMO. But then again, BPA is probably best served with a sound FA plan that aspires for something more than just waiting until all the great and good players sign somewhere and you then lowball the crap players left over.

I'm all for BPA. You could justify that we could use a Guard, Tackle, Receiver, and Tight End. What if the BPA is Saquan Barkley? What if it's Josh Rosen?

But this defense is bad. If the Cowboys don't start investing serious resources into it, the defense will continue to be their Achilles heal. Dak, Zeke, and this o-line can dominate time of possession all season long and it won't matter if opposing offenses can score in 4 or 5 quick plays. This draft netted us some quality depth on D with Taco, Lewis, Awuzie, and Xavier Woods. But outside of Sean Lee, we don't have game changers on defense. Demarcus Lawrence is playing lights out in a contract year, but I think fans are forgetting how inconsistent he's bee, as well as how many games he's missed due to injuries and suspension. We need to remember he is one strike away from a long suspension as well.

We need to add about 4 players to this defense and hopefully 2 elite players. If we don't use that 1st round pick on a defensive player, it had better be someone special like a Quenton Nelson or a Christian Kirk AND we already made serious additions on defense through free agency.

BPA isn't some static philosophy where it can't be slightly adjusted. So no, you don't take Barkley. You likely don't take a QB either. You don't take a C unless you think he can be a stud OG. But just about everywhere else, you could probably take the BPA at that position.

Let's not act like we haven't throw serious resources at the defense in terms of the draft. Our top three picks in 2017 were defense. Our 2nd and 3rd rounders in 2016 were defense. Our first two picks in 2015 were on the defensive side. Our 2nd and 4th (we didn't have a 3rd) in 2014 were defense.

So we should stop acting like we don't invest draft capital in the defense. The bigger issue is we kind of suck at drafting on defense and further, we actually invest little to nothing in the defense in FA. So when you don't draft well on defense and largely ignore defensive improvements in FA, you get what we have......... a crappy defense.

Because we have not been great at drafting defensive players does not mean we should stop drafting defensive players. That's the same argument fans have made for staying out of free agency.

How about getting better at it? Learning from our mistakes? Or simply get better talent evaluators.

I do feel this year's defensive performance will inspire change this off-season though.

I never said anything of the sort. I only argued in this thread to not get trapped into this belief that we absolutely positively have to take defense with our first round pick. This team could easily use a first round WR or OG (or OT and move Collins back to OG) as well. Even a game changing TE, although I am not sure one exists in this draft.

I think we are saying the same thing @Sydla ..just saying it differently.

BPA is the way to go, unless it's a player who plays a position you absolutely don't need.

That type of logic also comes into play if your grades on a few BPAs are similar and one of them plays a position of huge need for you.

In this scenario, I don't feel James Washington is a significant enough BPA or upgrade over Terrance Williams & Brice Butler to warrant ignoring the chance to upgrade to Taven Bryan, Claude Ferrell, Arden Key, and Harold Landry over the nothing we have at RDE.

In short, I don't feel James Washington is the BPA over Taven Bryan, Claude Ferrell, Arden Key, or Harold Landry.

I'd take Key over Washington hands down, and probably Chubb as well.

As far as need goes, I think WR may wind up being the biggest need of the offseason.

Ahhhh, they are cousins.

Apparently, there is a 3rd Chubb as well, Brandon (Bradley's brother) currently on the Detroit Lions roster.

I agree that 10 is too high, but I've always thought that James Washington is very good in jump ball situations.

Yes, BPA. Nobody ever regrets getting an elite player regardless of position.
