At the end of the day, I think that's what is holding us back at the championship level.
Too many decisions at the Front Office level that are about validating the Front Office. Too much complacency... "we like our guys".
Before the apologists come a running, yes they finally made some upgrades with veteran guys like Dontari Poe, Gerald McCoy, HaHa Clinton-Dix, and Everson Griffen, but look at those situations. HaHa looks to be a wasted signing and the Safety spot is still a disaster. We obviously were concerned about McCoy because they had an injury clause for the exact injury he blew out on the 1st day. Griffen was sitting there for 32 teams to sign whenever. Aldon Smith was out of the league. Poe finally erased a near-decade long incorrect Front Office philosophy of completely buying in to Marinelli's outdated thinking.
Don't get me wrong, I like some our our signings..Poe, Griffen and Smith for sure. I just wish this FO stopped worrying about being right and started worrying about being great. This team is so close IMO.
Minnesota just made a bold move. Seattle made an expensive and incredibly bold move. These are the types of teams we have to beat in the playoffs. Meanwhile, we just sit around and hope like heck the Safety position and the 3Tech position work themselves out. You can usually hide one weakspot on defense, especially when you have 4 or 5 "Blue" (aka Elite) guys and a professional, modern (aka not Marinelli or Kiffin) Defensive Coordinator.
You can't hide three weak spots... Free Safety, Strong Safety, 3Tech.
