Gatorade & Sunflower Seed Nightmares
Posted by CBS11
That's what rookie tight end Martellus Bennet is having. As par for the rookie course, Bennett is responsible for making sure Cowboys pro-bowl tight end Jason Witten doesn't go thirsty. Purple Gatorade is Witten's favorite. It doesn't stop there. Witten also loves sunflower seeds and part of Bennett's job is to make sure Witten doesn't go hungry either. One day the rookie brought ranch flavored, which didn't go over too well. Witten prefers plain.
Bennett is a talker. If he becomes a player, he will be interviewed left and right. He's the #3 tight end right now behind Witten, of course, and Tony Curtis. Bennett didn't impress too many folks the first week of camp, including Sports Illustrated NFL Columnist Peter King. But during the practice session Witten had off, head coach Wade Phillips said that the rookie was impressive, making some of his best blocks of camp.
Bennett is also a basketball player and flirted with the idea of going directly from high school to the NBA in 2005. He worked out with some teams, that indicated he would probably be a second-rounder, which meant he would most likely have to play overseas, something which held no interest to him.
The most "welcome to the real world" part, he told me, occured after a workout with the then-Sonics. He was sitting in the office after the workout and the team told him they could see him contributing as a 2-guard primarily as a defender. "They told me I would be defending Kobe Bryant, LeBron James," Bennett recalls. He sat there, silent for a few minutes and decided right then and there, he wasn't ready for the NBA. Smart move.
See much more of Bennett Tuesday night on TXA 21 News at 8 p.m. and CBS 11 News at 10 p.m.

A Few Observations
Posted by CBS11
Hello Cowboys fans... now that I've left training camp in Oxnard, I thought I'd share a few observations from what my highly-trained eye captured at camp.
1. Romo, Witten and Owens will be an unstoppable force.
OK... I know that this sounds obvious, but seriously... Romo looked as focused as I've ever seen him, Witten was catching everything in sight and T.O.... well, he was simply T.O.
2. Felix Jones is going to be a threat.
From draws, to delays, to misdirections, to screens and even split out wide... Felix displayed trememdous speed and elusiveness. He could prove to be something special. (And no, I'm not getting out the anointing oil or booking him passage to Canton).
3. Isiah Stanbeck could contribute THIS year.
He was catching the ball well, showing great speed (especially on the reverse). The transition to wide receiver is treating him well.
4. The secondary is RIDICULOUSLY deep.
When Evan Ogleby is the standout defensive back in camp so far... I think that bodes well. The other players have tremendous pedigree and will be good players for the season... so having a guy like Oglesby making plays should mean good things for the group.
5. And lastly...
I shoulda made one last In-N-Out stop. DANGIT!!!!!!!!!!!!
