For me, the best case scenario is other teams are not sold on his 1 year improved behavior during a contract year and his price is more reasonable. But maybe that’s a pipe dream.I think you are exactly right. This has been my problem with this trade. The better Pickens does, the more likely he is off the team next year. It seems to me that a best case scenario will end in a 3rd round comp pick. So what was the point of the trade?
It's not just the money either. If they wait until next year, the cap would take a bigger hit since there are no rookie years left to absorb the contract.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out next year.
