Tech will be ready whatever they do.
They have a HS kid incoming from Georgia who is the state best recruit and a 5-star beating out Georgia.
Also signed the highest rated OT in the country beating out UT.

But they will stay old and add portal guys as long as it is legal.
No 4 loss seasons in sight.

TT is just writing bigger checks bc they couldn't get these guys any other way which is fine. That's the current system. UGA is loaded with 4-5 star guys every year. Unfortunately, one of them wasn't the QB. An issue TT had as well.

Only 3 members of Ole Miss starting offense isn't a transfer.

TT's QB was a high 4 star that was unfortunately playing on a broken leg.
His Elite 11 back up was out with an ACL.

Georgia lost because they gave up over 40 points. Not a QB issue.
 
The portal may be flattening the overall landscape but in the end, it's going to further separate those with resources from those that don't have resources. And that's if one chooses to use those resources. TT is just plowing money into the portal, signing everyone they touch. Conversely, Notre Dame, who craps gold bars appears to be more reticent to spend money required to get the players they want. Well, that will result in a shift where TT simply is more likely to compete for a NC in the future than ND. We see it with Clemson where they took the position that the portal was not how they want to do business. And since then, Clemson has languished.

If you have the resources, you better use them, or you are going to find yourself on the outside looking in. That's the age of college football now.

Well, its different at every program. UGA has the youngest team in the SEC. They don't go out and load up on portal guys either bc they normally have plenty of 4 and 5 star guys ready to play. Same at ND. I think IU is just a product of an amazing coach. I don't think that level of talent reaching the heights it has reached so far is something many if any can replicate.

TT is going to compete as long as it can buy the right players. Maybe the more traditional powers are anticipating a revamped portal system in the near future. So, they are still relying on HS recruiting more than transfers. But until that day comes, the teams that an afford to be aggressive in the portal are going to be able to compete with anyone. I think OK State just made a statement that they are in now. I still don't hear much from Bama or UGA signing high dollar players out of the portal.

Prime time College football has ALWAYS been about the money.

My college roommate's brother was a starting line backer on a national championship team. This was back in the 80's.

Some of those football players had REAL nice cars but no one ever said anything.

Now the money is going to the players on the books.

Per the New York Times, according to the cost of doing business in college football today at the larger programs...

QB 1 to 4 million
OT 600K to 1.3 million
RB 400K-900K
WR 500K to 1 million
TE 300K to 900K
Edge Rushers 500K to 2 million
Interior DL 500k to 1.5 million
Corners 250K-1 million
Safeties 250K to 900k

Well, I went to a sports camp in the 80's staffed by UT Vol football players. They were not paid and were super careful about not accepting anything that could be construed as a gift. The parents were not allowed to even tip them at the end of camp. So we all have stories from back in the day.

What was back then is nothing compared to the current system which basically has no rules on transfers or compensation.

See the difference is I actually coached at some of those camps in the 90s....
The "name" players were compensated to appear. The rank and file were not. We peons got some benefits and swag and really good food but seldom cash. But Bam Morris? He was paid to appear. It was his picture on the posters.

I also camped 3 times as a low 3-star type HS recruit. OKST, SMU and Tech.
At OKST future Miami Hurricane and Dallas Cowboy Kevin Willaims (at the time Dallas Roosevelt's QB) made over 1000 bucks jumping over a car the long ways. Not sure how the college players had the money to put that payment together; but I am guessing it wasn't in the standard budget of a 20-year-old OKST football player.
Kevin the next day won the dunk contest, and I do not know how much if any money exchanged hands, but it was reportedly another large amount (by 1989 standards).

Absolutely true that many transfers do not "hit". But they hit at least at twice the rate of HS kids.

And the investment has paid off in the 100's of millions worth of brand value and marketing for Texas Tech.
That doesn't even include the local impact which has been off the charts.
Nor does it include the fact you force your way into any Super League and secure what is BILLIONS long-term.

Texas Tech has over 20 people donating millions to the cause because it was all by design. They knew it was going to be a short window to life the program and win big.

Not surprisingly, Indiana and Texas Tech have the biggest portal hauls thus far. They've gotten the most out of their investments, so their donors are opening those wallets even wider. Mark Cuban openly admitted that he made Indiana NIL very happy because they made him very happy. Those types of donors were donating 50M to get their name on buildings so donating 10M to NIL is really just a drop in the bucket.
