See the difference is I actually coached at some of those camps in the 90s....
The "name" players were compensated to appear. The rank and file were not. We peons got some benefits and swag and really good food but seldom cash. But Bam Morris? He was paid to appear. It was his picture on the posters.

I also camped 3 times as a low 3-star type HS recruit. OKST, SMU and Tech.
At OKST future Miami Hurricane and Dallas Cowboy Kevin Willaims (at the time Dallas Roosevelt's QB) made over 1000 bucks jumping over a car the long ways. Not sure how the college players had the money to put that payment together; but I am guessing it wasn't in the standard budget of a 20-year-old OKST football player.
Kevin the next day won the dunk contest, and I do not know how much if any money exchanged hands, but it was reportedly another large amount (by 1989 standards).

Wel, if Bam Morris was compensated to appear, it was under the table and totally against NCAA rules. Obviously this was going on to some degree in the shadows or SMU wouldn't have lost their football team, but its nothing compared to today.

Absolutely true that many transfers do not "hit". But they hit at least at twice the rate of HS kids.

And the investment has paid off in the 100's of millions worth of brand value and marketing for Texas Tech.
That doesn't even include the local impact which has been off the charts.
Nor does it include the fact you force your way into any Super League and secure what is BILLIONS long-term.

Texas Tech has over 20 people donating millions to the cause because it was all by design. They knew it was going to be a short window to life the program and win big.

Not surprisingly, Indiana and Texas Tech have the biggest portal hauls thus far. They've gotten the most out of their investments, so their donors are opening those wallets even wider. Mark Cuban openly admitted that he made Indiana NIL very happy because they made him very happy. Those types of donors were donating 50M to get their name on buildings so donating 10M to NIL is really just a drop in the bucket.

Indiana is bank rolled by Mark Cuban. I don't think many know it.

Disagree. That's just a lack of perspective. I too have experience inside an athletic department and student athletes had it made even before NIL. They got to play the sport they loved, free tuition, food, place to live, preferential class registrations and a tutor for every class. They were kings on campus and treated like royalty. That's nothing like having a real job.

That's not at all true.
Camps were one of the first ways to legally play players.
It was an "off-season job".

I am certain there were also some handouts that were illegal, but the camp paychecks were 100% legal.

But yes, players couldn't be (legally) tipped. That stopped some players but not most.

I believe the key word in your post is "by 1989 standards".

We are now going by 2025 "standards". Heck, you can even look at the NFL. Troy Aikman avearged 4.62 million per year during his playing career. That averages out to around 11 million per year by todays standards for the rate of inflation. The average salary for 86 QB's now in the NFL is higher than what Aikman made, and I think we can agree he wasn't your average quarterback.

I find it ironic that Nick Saban because the sport was becoming too much about money for the players, yet how much did Saban make in his college coaching career?

Honestly without the players, the sport would have nothing to offer for good entertainment. No different than the NFL. The only difference is now the college players are actually getting a piece of the pie. I don't see anything wrong with that because if you're going to make the coaches millionaires, why not share that wealth with the people who actually play?

Reality is money has always been exchanged with college football players in one way or another, but now it's just legal, and not because college football wanted to do it.

NCAA players were first allowed to accept pay for working at their schools summer camps in 2014.

Technically, prior to the 2014, players could work at camps off campus for "actual work at a reasonable market rate, not based on their fame or athletic reputation". In addition such jobs had to be approved by the schools compliance office. So, bc my camp was a football camp, the players were not compensated...... officially. Now tell me how nothing I said is true and your perspective is the way, the truth, and the light. lol

Not surprising, most of the complaining has been coming from those who’s teams suck and have not benefited from either the playoffs or the NIL.
