JOHNSON WANTS TO BE OCHO CINCO, LEGALLY

Posted by Michael David Smith on August 12, 2008, 7:24 p.m. EDT

Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson was fined $5,000 for wearing “Ocho Cinco” on the back of his jersey before a game in 2006.

To avoid getting fined, Johnson hasn’t done it since then. But Johnson now has a plan for how he can get away with having “Ocho Cinco” spelled out over the “85″ on his back.

We’ve learned that Johnson has taken the first steps in the state of Florida toward legally changing his last name to Ocho Cinco.

Seriously.

If Johnson follows through on this, his actual, legal name will be Chad Ocho Cinco, and the NFL would then (we assume) allow him to put his new last name on the back of his jersey.

From a business standpoint, this might be Chad’s way of picking up some of the extra cash that he wants to make but that the team has said it won’t give him. The jersey would instantly become one of the NFL’s top sellers, and NFL players get a cut of all sales of their jerseys.

In recent interviews, including one on ESPN Monday night, Johnson has made veiled references about future plans that he has said will change the way fans think about him. This is a strange one, to say the least.

Why doesn't CJ do it like TO does? TO is giving away tshirts to guys on the team but he seems he intends to sell them on the internet. The sayings have nothing to do with the NFL so I presume the NFL doesn't get any piece of the action and it all goes to TO or his charities if that's what he wants to do.

Anyway, why doesn't CJ start saying his own shirts with Oucho Cinka or whatever on it? He wouldn't have to share any of the monies with the NFL.

I don't speak spanish so forgive me if I'm wrong, but I remember hearing on one of the talking head shows that 85 is not even pronounced ocho cinco in Spanish. Can someone please clarify this.

Ocho Cinco is like saying Eight Five in English.

Correct. Chad's simply an idiot.

Ocho cinco means "eight, five". Ochenta y cinco means "eighty-five".

And if he goes through with this name-change, then he's no longer just a goofball. At that point, I'd classify him as seriously deranged with a MAJOR screw loose.

I'm talking Stephon Marbury on "Mike'd Up" deranged.

I think he means it to be eight five...just a guess.

But what if he goes to say, the Chargers, who already have an 85?

If he goes through with this, the Bengals should change his jersey number. Something like 18 or 19 would be a hoot.

DAYAMN. Do y'all hate him that much? I'm PRETTY SURE he knows it doesnt mean eighty-five directly. It's just the young//hip thing to do. Maybe he just likes the name Ocho Cinco a lot?

Y'all crack me up...

IMO it's a smart move by him because everyone will buy his new jersey. It's all about $$$ when it comes down to it.

Not sure how you grew up... but intentionally sounding like an ignorant and uneducated clown because it's the "young/hip" thing to do makes you an idiot in my book.
Greatest video on the internet.
Agreed. In Marbury's case, drugs + sheer stupidity = hilarity for the rest of us.

Some Cincy fans might by it, but given his uncertainty on the team after this year, I sure wouldn't want to risk buying it and them have him leave if I was a fan of theirs.
