Surgery for Bengals’ Johnson?

By Jason Cole, Yahoo! Sports

CINCINNATI – Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson’s inactivity during the morning practice to open the team’s three-day mini-camp was not surprising given the recent acrimony. However, it did create some interesting back and forth between Johnson’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, and the team about why Johnson was unable to participate.

Rosenhaus said that Johnson has bone spurs in his right ankle that the team has said will require surgery. The team, which initially said Johnson had only an undisclosed “ailment,” countered that in the afternoon by saying that Johnson told them he had a back problem just before going out to practice.

The team wrote in a released statement Thursday: “Chad Johnson was given a physical this morning by one of the Bengals team doctors. He did not report any physical problems to the doctor and he was cleared by the doctor for practice. Later, after the physical was concluded, Chad told our training staff that his back was sore. He refused to practice.”

Until later in the day. According to the team’s website, Johnson participated in drills during the early portion of the afternoon session.

Earlier, Johnson joined his teammates about 10 minutes late for the first practice. The only thing he did was a “mirror” drill with fellow wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, then watched the rest of practice. Johnson never caught a pass and never ran a route.

After the early practice, coach Marvin Lewis gave the ailment explanation and said the team’s medical staff was “investigating” and was “going to do some further studying.” After that odd explanation, Rosenhaus said Johnson has bone spurs in his ankle that prevented him from participating in the mini-camp.

Rosenhaus said there is a difference of opinion between Johnson and the team on how to deal with the injury. The Bengals would prefer that Johnson have surgery on the ankle to remove the bone spurs. Rosenhaus said that Johnson has been told by respected orthopedic surgeon Dr. Robert Anderson that he doesn’t need to have surgery.

Surgery to remove bone spurs could keep Johnson out of much of training camp, which the Bengals are set to open on July 28 in Georgetown, Ky. Last year, New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress had offseason surgery to remove bone spurs. Burress had the surgery in February, but was only able to practice once a day every other day in training camp.

This is the latest turn in the drama between Johnson and the Bengals. Since the end of Cincinnati’s season, Johnson has complained about his contract and about the team, saying he wanted to be traded to a team he considered more serious about contending. Over the years, Johnson has jousted with the Bengals and the NFL over a number of issues, such as his touchdown celebrations.

CHAD, MARVIN EXCHANGE PLEASANTRIES

In video that was shot by the Cincinnati Enquirer and accompanied by surprisingly clear audio obtained via a microphone apparently strong enough to pick up the sound of a muffled fart from 100 yards, Bengals receiver Chad Johnson and coach Marvin Lewis share some words on Thursday, the first day of the team’s mandatory minicamp.

The video is right here.

Says Marvin, “When you gonna come give me some love?”Replies Chad, “Ain’t no love no more. It’s business.”Says Marvin, “Oh, okay. Good. Business is playing.”

And then Chad says this: “It’s scary when you got someone great, and he’s playing pissed off.”

Actually, that isn’t scary. Sometimes when a guy plays pissed off, he plays even better.

But we think we know what Chad is saying. He’s saying that maybe he won’t run as fast or jump as high or try as hard because he’s “pissed off.”

In our view, that would be conduct detrimental to the team, and Chad’s stated intention further set the stage for a T.O.-style confrontation between player and team.

Meanwhile, Marvin apparently recognizes the possibility that Johnson might not be around for all or part of the 2008 season. “He went to the meetings, but didn’t take any reps,” Lewis said, “which is kind of good because it allows us to move forward. The young guys need the work.”

This may end badly for all parties this year...sad really. Chad would be better advised to stay quiet and let his business manager handle it.

I think he saw that TO was successful in getting out of Philly & landed with the Cowboys for a pretty good contract.

Must admit I'm fed up with players (see Burress & others) who sign a contract & then 2-3 years later want a new contract for lots more money. So far, that kind of thing doesn't seem to happen with any of the Cowboy players (except for Ellis' whining) & I'm pleased. Understand it's their jobs/careers and injuries/lifestyle down the road will be affected by all the hits they take. But still, most of the more visible players are earning so much more money then we average Americans can even fathom so pardon me when I get fed up. It's not like anybody is forcing these players to play in the NFL; they can always take their college degree and go out into the real world & see what kind of lifestyle they can afford on those salaries.

And most of the owners are earning so much more than the players. We just don't bash the owners because we DO NOT KNOW what they are making which is how it should be. The Michael Jordans are flying personal jets and eating at 5 star restaurants... the team owners own those jets and restaurants.

Caring about Chad Johnsons work happyness is about as useful to me as caring about yours. It is none of my business or concern.

From what I know this isn't over money. Lewis said some things last year that upset him and he also has griped about the team not doing anything to fix their defense. He doesn't expect them to be able to contend this year and he's probably right.

The Bengals are just not playing this correctly.

Look, I run a business. If someone comes into my office and says they don't want to be here, then they're gone. You don't want someone on your team who doesn't want to be there. They don't work as hard, and worse they poison the attitude and work ethic of the other people on the team.

So, in order to show up this person because he is under contract, the Bengals will create a big distraction that could destroy their 2008 season. Oh, but they'll prove a point... To who??

In the NFL, apparently you can get two #1's for someone like that.
