Chad: I'll show up
BY JEFF TINDALL

Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson said Wednesday in an interview with ESPN's Brian Kenny he will not sit out the 2008 season.

Johnson was reacting to comments made Tuesday by head coach Marvin Lewis at the owner's meetings in Florida. The coach had said the Bengals are "prepared to move on" if the all-star wide receiver decides to sit out the 2008 season.

"It's unfortunate that Chad has put himself in that situation, because a lot of people who really had affection for him now see him in a different light," Lewis said Tuesday.

"Affection? That's the problem right there," Johnson responded Wednesday. "The player is not gonna change. Chad has to do what's right for Chad... That's why (Lewis) made the comment. He thinks I'm worried about people liking me. Those days are over. I'm not worried about them anymore, because I have to do what's right for me."

Regarding Lewis' comment that "If (Chad) shows and does things, and does (them) the right way, I'm willing to take the bullets for him again and allow him to come back the right way," Johnson took umbrage.

"Don't take any bullets for me. Don't take one bullet," Johnson said in the ESPN interview Wednesday. "Do I get in trouble? Do I do anything wrong off the field? Do I? What bullets? I'm not a player that comes with bullets. I'm no threat. I'm not a problem. OK, I celebrate. Whoop-de-do. You know what you get when I touch the field every Sunday."

ESPN's Kenny asked Johnson point-blank if he planned to sit out or show up for the team's mandatory full-squad minicamp in mid-June.

"My plans are to show up and embarrass everybody that tries to cover me," Johnson said. "If they're satisfied with what we have, and think that's gonna get us where we need to go, then so be it."

I couldn't see Chad Johnson and TO co-existing in harmony for any amount of time. Eventually one would get upset that the other was getting more pass attempts than he was. In that regard, Roy Williams might actually be a good personality fit here because he has a laid back personality. I can't see him demanding to be "the guy".

Even when they're decent, the Bengals are an absolute embarrassment. I love it.

Chad sounded insane or just plain ole fashioned dumb. Wow, that was a tough interview to listen to. His agent was definately not there for that one.

Chad and TO both recently played opposite receivers who were thrown a ton of passes, with no real problems. I don't think Chad would be a good idea, but he seems happy havin TJ on the other side.

I think Witten would be the one who would end up getting bitter.

No Marvin you have it wrong. This is the same old Chad we always knew. Different light? I don't think so.

I am not saying I agree, and I dont know the ins and outs of this sordid tale, but I can see Marvin's point. I think they always knew what chad was, but his antics were cheeky and fun. But now, Chad is playing a different game, the I am not going to play and will hurt our team's competiveness game. That kinda game will make your team see you in a different light real fast. (specifically probably Carson, who seems like a Troy-like connsumate professional)

When have you heard Chad cry about being "the guy"? He, like most WRs, wants the ball in their hands because he feels like he can help his team win-not a bad attitude to have IMO. I've never heard of him and TJ going at it ,and as a mattter of fact, TJ had more catches than him the past two seasons, if I'm not mistaken. His attitude has everything to do w/ the losses and the failures of the Bengals organization not his personal numbers. Chad isn't the ****** most seem to think he his...he's a clown, but not a locker room "cancer"!

That was a very painful interview to watch, a complete trainwreck. I just can't see the Bengals and Marvin Lewis keeping him after all he's done. If they do keep him, they will have a ticking time bomb on their hands that could go off at any time.

I understand Marvin's POV.... but to stand firm to make a point or on principle alone would harm team... could ruin the season.

Sometimes you gotta let it go.... he should. I think Carson is sick and tired of Chad's boollasheet too.

Are you kidding me? He's always throwing tantrums on the sidelines, and reportedly he has a very chilly relationship with Carson Palmber because he's always barking at him.

TJ has more catches, but Johnson gets more attempts .. TJ just converts at a higher rate.

RECEIVER TARGET CMP 1ST DOWN REC TD
Chad Johnson 32.9% 63.6% 48.8% 3.9%
TJ Houshmadzadeh 29.8% 77.9% 50.5% 4.1%
Chris Henry 15.2% 61.9% 45.2% 3.8%

Furthermore... I think the whole "I will not hold out" is just Chad getting ready to be moved eventually. Who knows? maybe they told him to be cool and they will figure something out.... just dont make it look like you got your way and both sides win... in a way.

No, he won't, because the cap hit is huge, like 8 million dollars. The fact is, Cincinatti cannot trade him, even if they want to.

And Chad is a ****** anyways. He is making it seem that he has just become concerned with himself, and before that, he was all about the team. The guy, at least to me, has always been selfish. Further, he has one of the best QBs in the game throwing him the ball, which means that he can't complain about not being used properly. He also gets paid incredibly well, so he has no reason to be whining.

CJ had 93 receptions, 6 more than last year, right about his average for the last 5 years. TJ had 112 receptions, so even with 9 less passes aimed at CJ, TJ was still better in terms of percentage of catches. He outplayed Chad Johnson by 10 catches.

CJ may be a little angry that TJ is out-performing him.

As I said, CJ is clearly selfish. His numbers are right up there with his average, and he is getting paid plenty of money. What more can you want?
