Chaisson vs UGA

I disagree again..

You guys are completely misevaluating this player.

1. He is 20 years old.

2. He is showing all the traits to do whatever you need at a high level.

He can rush the passer, hold the edge, and drop into coverage.. He is a complete football player as far as potential upside.

3. Speed and athleticism with size? Check and check

He has a lot of Von Miller in his game if anything but looks more Defensive End like when he gets in a 3 point stance and shows ability to bend the edge.

He checks all of the boxes and has superstar potential.. If you’re facing one of these mobile QBs then a player like Chaisson is going to keep a guy like that contained.

I think if he goes back to school and hits 9 or 10 sacks then he is a top 10 and possibly top 5 pick.

With the value that pass rushers have I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go top 10 in this draft.
Furthermore, I'm not saying the guys upside is Irvin.

Similar body type and that's who he makes me think of.

At this point Chiasson has about the same chance of being Taco Charlton as he does DeMarcus Ware. He has the skills, it's up to him.

This right here is what you’re hoping to see more of as he progresses.

Chaisson had a good game against Georgia, he just didn't freak out and crush everyone Chase Young style.

This is his freak out and crush everyone game.

Considering how it was literally his next game after he held his own vs Andrew Thomas, I'm excited to see how high his development curve can go.

Guys, I just watched AJ Terrell against LSU. I couldn’t make it past the first pass he gave up. To me he’s another Mo Claiborne.

Did Terrell intercept Joe Burrow or not, otherwise I don’t care?

One constant in this thread was the okay of Thomas. He should be the pick if available.

But im the emo one :lmao:pathetic excuse for a man.

Luulz, you’re hoping this goes away aren’t you:

That first series was so bad i turned it off. He is def another Taco to me.
Does it get any better?
Was the sack on Thomas? If not i dont care.

Thomas controlled him most of the game but that's pretty standard when talking about a top 10-12 pick LT who may very well be the first OL off the board. Of course on the other side is Isaiah Wilson who is seemingly going to be a top 50 pick and possibly even a late 1st.

At the end of the day Chaisson beat Wilson clean for a sack with an inside spin (Q3/5:56) and beat Thomas for what was a sack for all intents and purposes (Q3/:11). Chaisson got the jump on Thomas with his burst several times but Thomas usually recovered to get back to even with his length, on this particular play Thomas couldn't recover and Chaisson showed great bend to close on the QB. In the boxscore it's an incomplete pass but the eye test tells you that it was 1/10th of a second from a sack or even strip sack, and I'm not totally convinced his hand was moving forward before the ball was out.

Chaisson is raw as far as his pass rush plan/stringing together counter moves so it's not a surprise that Thomas often was able to recover using his length against Chaisson's initial burst, but ultimately Chaisson put up a sack and missed another by a split second against possibly two first round OT's.

What I personally love about his game is that he's very fundamentally sound against the run for his size/age/experience level and doesn't back down against guys outweighing him by 60+ lbs. There are several times where he goes 1-on-1 against either Thomas or Wilson and sets the edge without giving any ground, resulting in runs for little to no gain.

Combine that with the pass rush upside and natural explosiveness that he brings off the edge and that's why I'm taking him 100 times out of 100 over pretty much anybody that's likely to be available at 17. Kinlaw is the one guy I'd take over him, assuming the top WR's are gone.

Other impressive plays in case you're interested:

Q1: 7:54 (sets the edge 1-on-1 vs. Thomas, stacks/sheds and strings the run out to the sideline, goes for no gain), 2:48 (reads screen immediately, doesn't unnecessarily engage Thomas, explodes directly into backfield and knocks down pass)

Q2: 8:40 (sets edge 1-on-1 vs. Wilson, doesn't provide escape route to RB with middle clogged who is forced to dive head first into pile for no gain), 1:46 (gets jump on Thomas with his burst but as he usually does Thomas recovers to stop him from a free run at the QB, Chaisson does gets near the QB and starts working back inside but the ball is out in 2 seconds, it's hard to say Chaisson directly forced the poor decision but it was a rushed decision and a relatively poor one to throw a jump ball towards Stingley who was in better position than the WR when the ball was released, and it was made with Chaisson bearing down and the only LSU rusher near the QB, end result is an INT)

Q3: 7:07 (beats Wilson with a quick inside club, forces early/errant throw), 6:58 (sets the edge again 1-on-1 vs. Thomas on zone RPO action, doesn't get pushed off the LOS even an inch, stacks and holds for several seconds before shedding and again stringing run out to the sideline for little gain)

Good post, and I agree with a lot of what you're saying except taking him in the top 20. Some of the plays you referenced are what make him so enticing I just wish there was more of those spread throughout his body of work for the season. He was not above average in sacks, TFLs, pressures, pass rush win rate, PFF overall grade or PFF pass rush grade.

You see plays that look like a top 10/15 player...but the traits haven't translated to consistent production. He's a risk/reward pick where you're banking on the upside, which I like, just not in the top 20.

This game does nothing to convince me Chaisson will make a big impact for the Cowboys.

However, watching this game reminded me of something I thought back in January. Cushenberry got a lot of accolades but I think Damien Lewis is a way better player.

I definitely dont think he'll be a big time player year 1 but Catch made a compelling argument that he will be a nice player next year and beyond.

Maybe. I don't see Taco in him. He gives too much effort to be Taco. But he looks like a LB to me, maybe a 3-4 OLB?

I like Chaisson but he will need time to develop. My hope is that Smith and Gregory give you the equivalent of a starting right end this year. With Smith on a 1 year contract, Chaisson will takes his spot next year.

Just FYI, Gil Brandt compare Chiaasson to Demarcus Ware. If he can be half as good as Ware was I am all for grabbing him.

That first series was so bad i turned it off. He is def another Taco to me. Meaning a guy who dallas likes that i tried to force myself to like but i cant. Thomas treated him like a child. Anybody who saw the full game. Did it get any better?

It was a lot of fun watching this game again, after hearing these names repeatedly on draft shows. A LOT of NFL talent on both sides.

I have coached a DL, and I will tell you a couple of things. First, considering he was going against one of the best Ts in the draft, the first series was not that bad. You can already see the traits that the NFL is drooling over. He came off the snap - boom - several times. You have to keep in mind, this is SEC speed, if he was playing against an FCS T, he would appear to be MUCH faster. I also guess is that he changed his cleats after this first series. I felt like he was struggling with that turf, which is common for kids that play on grass for the majority of their games. Plus, one series is a TERRIBLE way to determine a kid's worth. I don't know what to tell you, but I promise if you looked at DLAW's college tape there would have been many series where he was handled by a MCW T a lot worse than Chaisson was handled in that first series by future first round SEC tackle. And Taco? Taco had none of the traits of Chaisson. I can't even begin to fathom that comparison. It reminds me of the LVE to Bobby comparisons from a few years ago.

Also, go to the next series and go to 27:39. What Chaisson does is not textbook. Definitely not highlight film material, but I was impressed. He gives up 70 pounds to that future first-rounder and holds his ground. A lot of EDGE tweeners would have been swallowed up there, but he holds his ground, forces Swift (NFL running back) to alter his path and allows the rest of the defense to catch up. That is HUGE to me.

To answer your question, it did get better. Chaisson is much better than Taco and projects to be better.

Well with the rumor that Dallas wants to run a multiple front Patriots style defense, that could be a plus that he can rush from edge or play OLB. I would be fine with him at 17. My fear is that he may not make it to us.
