With rules like these, I don't know why a QB just wouldn't lower his head when about to be sacked so that his helmet hits the defenders? Automatic 15 yard penalty and a first down!
Rules are supposed to have a purpose, a reason behind them. When you start losing the meaning behind things, you begin to just go through the motions. Was Jay Ratliff attempting to take his head off, or was it incidental because of the speed and nature of the game?
Another stupid rule is calling the face mask always a 15 yarder. If your hand swipes down and your fingers get stuck in the face mask, how does a player avoid that?
The world is not black and white. I don't understand why the NFL has implemented this seemingly "racist" policy when it comes to rules. You have to always consider the context.
