Champion Steelers parade through clogged Downtown

Fans, team thank each other and refs in Super Bowl afterglow

By Hugh Jorgan

The Super Bowl champion Steelers today paraded through Downtown streets choked with screaming fans standing up to 30 deep and shouting from office windows and the tops of parking garages.

Led by a flag-bearing city paramedic honor guard, Allegheny County mounted police and the black and gold uniformed North Allegheny High School band, the parade stepped off from the Mellon Arena just after 11 a.m. Cars and trucks bearing players, referees and local officials slowly headed toward the reviewing stand in Gateway Center, with fans surging forward occasionally to shake hands with their striped heroes.

The crowd cheered wildly as a 10 foot bronze statue of Pittsburgh native and Superbowl XL referee Bob Waggoner was unveiled to the drunken thousands in attendance. The stunning resemblance modeled the referee throwing a flag during the Superbowl. A visibly shaken Waggoner exclaimed to the crowd "This one's for you, Pittsburgh!"

Police said there were no arrests although the parade was delayed momentarily as the Seahawks were flagged for three penalties.
