Change just for the sake of change?

My brother and I were discussing possible roster changes I thought the boy should make. He believes that what I am talking about is pure desperation and it is way to early to give up on the season. I told him that I believe these changes should happen as they give the team a better chance to win right now. Just going to post what we were talking about and would like to see what other members think.

1. Bench Brandon Weeden
Not much to discuss because we both agree it can't get any worse.

2. Leary vs Collings
I believe that Leary is hurt right now and is not over his groin injury. I actually think he is playing worse than Doug Free. My brother believes Leary is the better player and that I am overreacting. I do believe that a healthy Ron Leary is better right now, but we are not getting that Ron Leary. He is getting abused out there and his play is hurting the Oline.

3. Jones vs Church
I was telling him that the bye week is the perfect time to put Jones in there at FS and move Wilcox to SS. Again he stated that this is pure desperation. I really believe Jones is a much better safety than Church right now that he gives the team the best chance to win. The only reason I hesitate on this move is because Claiborne will not be resigned unless it is on the cheap like Scandrick. Carr will be a cut next year and not be asked to take a pay cut because he has been bad. I don't know if the team should move Jones when he could easily be the starting corner next year. If he is moved to FS than we have to leave him there as it is not fair to bounce him around. I think this is the only change that merits discussion.

4. Make Michael the starter, bench McFadden, give the Dunbar role to Randle
I think this team needs to give all the Dunbar packages to Joseph Randle. He is not an every down running back but he isn't a bum either. I think he has really good hands and could still be a mismatch in those packages being covered by a linebacker. McFadden needs to be cut. He has been bad. I would seriously consider activating Gus Johnson and sending McFadden packing. I would then give the majority of the carries to Michael. My brother argues that he has done nothing in this league, I argue that while true, Randle and McFadden have already showed us what they could do. I understand that teams are stacking the line, but even when there have been opportunities Randle has hesitated too much. I think if your going to keep running on 1st down and be predictable might as well wear out the defense. I think Michael is the only back the team has that can wear down a defense as I don't see Randle finishing runs or wearing anyone down. Michael in my opinion gives you a better chance of breaking some tackles and getting into 2nd and 4, 2nd and 5, and 2nd and 6 situations vs the majority of 2nd and 8s this team has been having.

So what do you guys think? Is this pure desperation on my part??

Yes I would unless Cassell looks really bad in practice.

Stepping back from the emotions, if they Cowboys had the defensive performance that they had against the Pats in the Falcons and Saints games, they probably win those even with Weed at QB. If Cassell is going to come in and throw a bunch of INTs then I wouldn't want him.

Leary had some bad plays but it was maybe 3 that I saw in real time. You really need to review all of his plays to see how he played overall. Collins definitely had a few bad plays per game when he played so it's not a slam dunk to make that change. Also, with the bye week Leary has time to get back near 100%.

Having said that, if Leary does struggle then make the change.

In my review of critical fail plays in both the Saints and Pats games the Safeties were really not a huge part of the problem. Yes, they've had some plays that look bad but when you step back and look at the critical plays the biggest problems are not the Safeties.

How about just giving Michael more carries to see what he can do. Unlike LG with Leary/Collins you don't have to make an all or nothing decision on this one.

He does have to be able to pass protect to get significant playing time and I have no idea how much awareness he has in that area.

The problem is that if you changing to a new QB that has only been with the team for 3 weeks then making a bunch of changes around him is problem not a good idea. The question with Michael in Seattle was primarily about him playing within the scheme. A new QB does not need a RB that does not or barely knows the scheme.

The same with Leary/Collins. With a new QB it's better to have the veteran unless the rookie is just drastically better.

1. I agree. We are not winning with Weeden. He needs to be benched. If we keep losing at least you are identifying other problems, like the game plan.
2. Leary may be hurting, but I think item one is greatly impacting item 2.
3. Jones is doing a decent job in his role. I've never liked Wilcox and putting a terrible tackler in the box will not help. We don't really have any options here.
4. Pick someone. I don't care who, just pick someone. I've never liked platooning RB's because I think one RB needs to get the bulk of the carries and get into a rhythm. If a RB gets hot you can rest him for a carry or two, but give one guy the ball 20+ times. Once again, the platoon is ineffective.
