lol at the end of the season I was for the full time back. I thought if we were to emulate what we had it would be good. Change of pace would be fine with me though. We will really see if Barber should get that big payday then.

Some of you are confused.
The point, which was backed up by some, is that you shouldn't draft a RB in the 1st few rounds that you wouldn't be comfortable with carrying 20 times per game. In other words, don't spend it on a 10 carry guy just because he is a change of pace back.
This is a pretty obvious argument in my book, and not particularly insightful.
So I doubt anyone would argue this point.

Actually its you that are confused. If you give a back 20 carries a game every game thats 320 carries a year and only 3 backs in all the NFL did that last year. When you do that you see what happens to guys like Jamal Anderson, Priest Holmes and Edgerrin James. They completely break down.

Backs like Emmitt Smith are once in a generation type guys.

You really dont want to average more than 15 carries a game and to do that you have to share the load to run a balanced offense.

People also need to consider that Felix Jones ran the ball 13 times a game the last two years. Chris Johnson and Jamal Charles averaged 20 carries a game last year.

I would be more concerned about their pass protecting over them breaking down of Barber were to go down.

What really needs to be noted here is that we really need a decent third RB. I do not want another Tyson Thompson project. I want a vet that knows what hes doing and that cna run the ball and be halfway effective.

No fuzzy, you are confused and dazed and somewhat bewildered, as we have seen before.
The point, again, which I didn't make BTW but I am trying to explain was "Would you, Mr. Fuzzy, draft a guy in the early rounds who was strictly a change of pace guy and couldn't be a 20 carry a game guy when needed."

The point wasn't how many backs do it or could do it. The point wasn't whether you believe in a two back system. It was pretty simple. A two back system is obviously the approach of choice in today's NFL, but that has nothing to do with the orginal post.

Take another shot of jack and recompose.

Your whole paradigm was based off of a back that carries the ball 20 tiems a game over the course of a season. Pretty much every year there are only a half dozen backs that do that. Thats not the flavor of the month; thats just how it is.

Basically what youre saying is that unless the back we draft comes in and is a top 5 RB then hes not worth drafting. People are getting entirely too caught up in the semantics of 'change of pace' or 'workhorse.' It has really no relevance for the preponderance of the players in question here.

Charles, Johnson and Jones are being tabbed as the change of pacers but Charles and Johnson were the workhorses for there prospective offenses carrying the ball 20 times a game and Jones had the 'misfortune' of playing behind DMac. He had several games carrying the ball well over 15 times and he performed admirably in all of them.

So then what is your point? I like Stewart, Mendenhall and Rice too but that does not mean that a guy like Johnson or Jones couldnt get the job done either.

Question

Who would you guys rather have.

Player A: He can carry the ball up to 30 times a game if need be but really doesn't start going until that 15th carry and defenses just can't handle it anymore and he becomes dominant.

Player B: Is just a threat to do something everytime he touches the rock no matter what carry it is.

For me, other than McFadden, 2 guys I would love to see on this team is Jonathan Stewart and Ray Rice.

They seem like they can produce with limited touches.

I agree with this thread, Dallas need a primetime running back, I say draft a guy like Kevin Smith in the 2nd round...
