Changed Philosophically

Let me just say i hope that doesnt just mean the Defense. The offense needs to change its philosophies just as much. And ill end that there.

Alot seem to think that phrase means changing to a 4-3. I like it, if its true. I was furious when Parcells switched to a 3-4 basically because Dallas never looked at alot of good def players because they wouldnt fit into the scheme. Where Dallas has drafted in drafts since Parcells made the switch there have been a serious amount of Talent on defense that didnt fit a 3-4 so Dallas never looked.

Ware in a 4-3 would be your weakside DE. Guy who is just let loose every play. But on the other side you need a guy who can rush the passer but is very stoud vs the run. Something Dallas doesnt have. Crawford could be but he's not a passrusher type DE. So Dallas would have to draft a DE noway would they try to sign a top DE in Fa because noway no how do they have the cap. I say you go the way of the draft. Margus Hunt would be good opposite Ware,

DT you have options in Ratliff, Hatcher and Lissemore and i think this is where you also use Crawford. Ratliff would be a good person to use the way zimmer used Glover. The two gap DT. Hatcher would be the the other DT. Lissemore and Crawford as depth.

LBer is where this defense gets good.

Lee playing the middle. And he plays with range. The guy can cover ground with the best ILB in the NFL. Carter IMO can do it all and Sims is a athletic speedy Lber. Carter has better coverage skills but IDK if you take Carter away from the LOS as much as you can afford with Sims. So typically Sims would be out on most sub packages. Nickle packages. Theres just so many possibilities with this defense in a 4-3.

IMO where this team needs to get better is the Safety. They arent bad but IMO Dallas has a group of strong safeties. Sensabaugh, Church, Johnson are all strong safeties. So in this draft i think if youre going 4-3, in round 2 you go after a FS. Eric Reid, TJ McDonald,Phillip Thomas are my top choices.

Conerback IMO is pretty much set. Carr,MO,Scandrick,Moore are going to be solid.

If Dallas is going 4-3 i hope they stay out of FA and focus on younger, cheaper way of building with the draft.

good post..you typod ware as a LB - but clearly you meant as a DE..

we definitely need another pass rusher on the strongside at DE...technically crawford can handle that position but I dont like him that much as a pass rusher..

Yeah i saw that quickly and changed it lol. I like Margus Hunt. Thats 82 inch wingspan is awsome. He doesnt stop moving and it just knows how to get to the QB. On crawford yeah he would be serviceable, but that would be having a younger marcus spears over there lol

Personally I think this "philosophical" change means more of an attacking-style defense as opposed to what we saw this past season.

I think it would be a big mistake to change to a 4-3 without knowing who your tackles were going to be. Say what you want but I don't believe that RR used his best personnel, except Spencer, to their optimum effectiveness.

Neither Ratliff nor Glover are 2 gap defensive tackles.

A 2 gap player is a guy like Vince Wilfork or Marcel Dareus. Ratliff and Glover are 1 gap guys that play on the outside shoulder of the guard in a 4-3 although Glover did the same thing between the center and guard. We are missing at least 3 pieces for a 4-3: SAM, base defensive end and a dominant 3 technique.

Perhaps Crawford can be a base defensive end but he would be an average player at this point. Wilber, Albright or some guy named Joe could be the Sam. The 3 technique needs to be a great player like Dareus, Suh, McCoy, Melton, or Red Bryant.

But they'd already know Ratliff Hatcher Lissemore are you top 3 DTs. Its cheaper just put it that way and uses the players talents better.

You dont keep Ratliff another yr for the 3-4 you cant pay spencer and you need a DE. So you need 3 big spots to fill going 3-4. In a 4-3 you need 1. A DE.

I thnk it means the opposite - less attacking, less chaotic, less taking chances. Granted we didn't do as much blitzing as the previous years but that I think was mainly due to injuries.

The Tampa 2 ... or even the defense Jimmy ran here were more conventional than what Ryan ran.

The only guy I think is qualified to start (as a tackle) in a 4-3 is Ratliff but he is a big question mark. Dallas would have to draft a two-gap tackle to start and single-gap to start or rotate if Ratliff gets back on his meds.

Jimmy's defense was predicated on relentless pursuit; eleven men flying to the ball. The LBs were not big but they could fly and they could tackle. Ironically, Jimmy showed the rest of the league how to beat speed: constant pounding with a huge o-line and a timing-based play-action passing game.

RR, for whatever reason, did not show any aggression at all in his play-calling in 2012. He was also fairly predictable.
