Changes I would make for next season

OK so this season was a bust, now what do we do? Wade is staying and says he will keep both Garrett and Stewart. I am praying that we will get rid of Bruce Read (STs coach) though.

Wade Wilson is another guy I would replace. Romo could really benefit from a true QB coach, someone with a lot of experience.

Here are the personnel changes I would make for next season:

Cut/release/not re-sign/trade/get-rid-of:

Terrell Owens - Owens is a distraction and forces the offense to react to him too much. He isn't helping the team anyway and isn't worth the drama he brings with him. Foolishly, Jerry has already inked him for 2009. I cut him anyway and take the loss.

Tank Johnson - He's happy to be a FA anyway so let him go. he didn't help us much other than a couple of good plays. see ya!

Adam Jones - Pacman didn't help us much. He was a waste of time on punt returns and rarely seemed to know where he was supposed to be on defense. Great athlete but not worth the trouble.

Either Anthony Henry or Ken Hamlin one of them has to go. I would prefer to keep Henry and play him at FS but if he won't make that move then goodbye. Hamlin has been up and down all season. he played well last year though so I will give him the benefit of the doubt if Henry won't move to FS. I don't think we can take the risk of letting both of them go this year. If we find a FA or young guy to replace them then see ya!

Brad Freakin Johnson - This guy should have never been on the team in the first place yet he has been here for two seasons.

Flozell Adams - This may have to wait until after next season. I hate to give up on this guy because LTs are a rare commodity but we've got to find a replacement for him and NOW! I would keep him if we can't find someone else but we need to draft a top rated LT.

Greg Ellis - This is another guy I hate to let go but he has outlived his usefulness to us and is a distraction these days. Time for you to leave grasshopper.

Zach Thomas - Is a FA and said he was happy about it. OK, goodbye. I like the guy and he is a HoFer but we need to get younger at LB. I'd like to see what Burnett can do.

Anyone else who wants to whine, complain, get into trouble, or be all about himself can walk too.

Now, here's what I would look to add:

FA:

OL - We need QUALITY backups at all three positions: OT, OG, & C. Proctor ain't it.

WR - We need another WR, one that will run his routes correctly and catch the ball. I don't know who will be available and I am NOT talking about Chad Johnson. I'm looking for a guy with some experience but not a superstar.

FS - Regardless of who we keep, Henry or Hamlin, we still need someone to back him up and push him for the starting job. Again, I'm not looking for an Ed Reed, although if he were available I'd take him in a heartbeat, just someone solid to backup the starter and step in when needed.

QB - We should have brought in a solid backup prior to this season and there were a lot of guys available. There should be a bunch to pick from this offseason as well. A younger guy with an arm and some ability.

The only place I would spend major bucks is on an LT if someone really good is available. Otherwise, spend wisely on solid players.

Draft:

We don't have a lot of high picks so we have to be judicious with the picks we do have. No reaches, no project players, no converted QBs or baseball players, just guys that can play their position well.

DB - We have plenty of CBs on the roster but we can always use more. If we let Adam Jones and henry walk then CB becomes a priority again. Safety is also a need if we don't secure on in FA.

OL - I have a rule that you always draft an OL on day-1 of the draft (well first 3 rounds now). You can NEVER have enough quality OLs as we found out this year. A replacement for Adams is needed but I don't think we can get one in this draft. A backup for Gurode is also desperately needed.

NT - Not a huge need but if we are letting Tank roll then we need someone to replace him and backup Ratliff. A big body would be nice if we are sticking with the 3-4. If we are going to more of a 4-3 then a solid DT would be nice.

QB - We should have drafted a QB this last year but didn't. This may depend on how many picks we have and when but we should look to groom a guy behind Romo.

WR - If someone falls to us that is worth taking then go for it. I am hopeful that Austin and Hurd can step up as well as a FA we pick up from somewhere but we should also be looking to the draft for new players.

Anyone we draft/sign should have ZERO legal/drug/attitude problems. No major egos, no drug busts, no pending court cases, no weapons charges or history of hanging out in clubs or with his homies. I'm not looking for choirboys but we need to avoid thugs and headcases.

I know Jerry is all about marketing this team but he needs to work on putting together a real TEAM for 2009 and not another collection of egos and individuals. Avoid problem children at all costs and look for solid contributors. Think 53 Jason Wittens or Tashard Choices and you've got the idea. Talent AND character!

Why would you cut a player like TO, who leads the team in TD's and constantly required a double team...

I keep saying it but no one seems to understand.

Anyone that just got a new contract (TO, Hamlin, Flo) aren't going anywhere because we'd take a big cap hit.

Because he is a distraction and his attitude permeates the entire team. That attitude is what made this season a failure.

He is also a hindrance to the offense functioning smoothly because Romo always has to be thinking about him. Is he getting enough passes thrown his way, will he complain if I don't throw him the ball, will he have a meltdown, will he throw a tantrum or pout on the sidelines, etc.

Also, he doesn't run good routes, he doesn't fight for the ball, he doesn't finish out routes, he drops too many passes (although that was less of a problem this year than in previous seasons).

He is a guy we just don't need, regardless of how awesome a physical specimen he is.

Ummm, what cap? Isn't the cap going away, or at least as we know it, in 2010?

I doubt Jerry does any of the things I suggest, it's just what I would do.

Yeah, it's just crazy fans who don't know squat about football who think this.

I guess that's why teams were lining up for his services after the Eagles let him go. Why did Philly let him go you might ask? Because he was a distraction to the team.

Why did the Niners let him go?

The dude has yet to make any team he has gone to better. He simply is not worth the hassle.

The very fact that every thread with his name mentioned anywhere in it will divide this forum is proof. This thread was not about Owens but about the team but the only thing anyone has responded to is my comment about Owens.

We still have to get through 2009 first. Any cap hits for those players would hit 2009.

Basically.

I guess that's why teams were lining up for his services after the Eagles let him go. Why did Philly let him go you might ask? Because he was a distraction to the team.

What bearing does him being a distraction in Philadelphia in 2005 (because he was upset with his contract) have on what he's like in Dallas?

Why did the Niners let him go?

The 49ers didn't "let him go;" He was scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent, only his agent botched the paperwork. He then asked for a trade and the 49ers, who were already in rebuilding mode (having cut 6 other offensive starters) acquiesced.

The dude has yet to make any team he has gone to better. He simply is not worth the hassle.

Are you serious? So last year's 13-3 team wasn't the best Cowboys team since the mid-90's?

I can tell you first hand that Owens essentially WAS the 49ers when they rebounded to make the playoffs in 2001 and 2002. And he was the best receiver on the team from 1997 onward (Rice was never the same after the knee injury he suffered in week 1 that year).

Without him, there's a more than fair chance they would have missed the playoffs every year since 1997.

A lot of those will happen.

But nothing will happen with Flozell and Hamlin.

That you can count on.

Way too much money to cut either one at this juncture. And who do you play in the place of Adams? Without a 1st round the chances of getting a LT who can start and play at an acceptable level is betweem slim & none.

Why cut Ellis? The guy is cheap and he can still rush the passer. He may be a whiner but he's a cheap whiner who can still perform at some level.

Terrell Owens was one of about 3 players still playing hard on the field yesterday. The other two were Tashard Choice and Tony Romo, who despite not having a good game was constantly trying to make a plays with what seemed like a jail-break pass rush every play. On one of his fumbles, there were FOUR Eagles in on the sack and one of them was Brian Dawkins. Yes, Brian Dawkins the Safety.

I'll never forget the play early in the season where Felix Jones broke out for a 60-yard TD - the image of Owens absolutely busting his butt down-field to make a block to spring Felix the Cat. Those are the kinds of plays that Owens didn't make in SF and PHI, but he has made constantly while on our team.
