Chargers meet with Burnett
Thursday, Mar 05, 2009
By Casey Pearce , Chargers.com
For the second time this week, the Chargers hosted a free agent that could potentially bolster their defense.
After chatting with safety Jermaine Phillips on Tuesday, the Chargers visited with linebacker Kevin Burnett Wednesday. The 6-3, 242-pound inside linebacker just completed his fourth season with the Dallas Cowboys.
“Kevin is a talented young player that has played in a system very similar to ours,” Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith said. “We enjoyed spending some time with him.”
Throughout his career, Burnett has excelled on special teams and thrived as a reserve on defense. He’s started four games in four years, including two last season. Burnett tallied 38 tackles and two sacks in 2008, and his 19 special teams tackles were the second most on the squad. He also finished second on the team in special teams tackles in 2006 and tied for third in 2007.
Burnett is familiar with the Chargers’ defense, having spent the past two seasons playing under former San Diego defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. Last season he was listed second on the Cowboys’ depth chart at the “Mo,” or weak inside linebacker spot.
Burnett grew up in the Los Angeles area and attended high school in Compton. He was a two-time All-Southeastern Conference performer at the University of Tennessee before the Cowboys drafted him in the second round in 2005.
